Hon. Secretary’s Report

Another year has gone by, still seeing changes within our sport; the latest is the Registration scheme that the SEAA are hoping to propose later on in the year. It is with regret that I have to report the sad loss of two more members of our Association and they are Bryan Nelson past Chairman from 1979 to 1982 and a Timekeeper. Also Albert Dickinson who was a Track Judge and helped many Officials within the county.

The Road Running section saw Jenny Grimwood take on this role and was helped through the year by Paul and myself. The clock we purchased a few years ago has now paid for itself and hopefully members will support any new venture that might come from this section. The Road Race levies continue to bring in money to the County. Once again we could not raise teams for the Inter-Counties 10k championships but one day I am sure we will.

The Track and Field Championships were held at the Northgate Sports Centre, Ipswich and 8 Records were broken. There were 4 Grade 1’s, 18 Grade 2’s and 38 Grade 3’s achieved throughout the Day which was a vast improvement on previous years.

The Hibbard Trophy meeting was held on 24th August at Norwich. The men improved on previous years but finished 4th out of five with 123 pts. The Senior Women finished 4th with 92 points and the U17 Mens finished 2nd with 230 points just 49 pts behind Hertfordshire and could have won it if they only had a second string athlete, but well done to all who took part.

The Association took a coach to Copthall for the South of England U20 Inter-Counties Match on 25th August. In the U20 Womens saw Jo Chapman finish 3rd in the Javelin, Anna Clayton second in the Hurdles and 5th in the Long Jump. Gemma Thake was 4th in 200M while Tania Spurling was 6th in the Triple Jump and the Team finished in 11th place. In the U15 Girls Wendy Meadows-Smith won the High Jump with 1.58M and Laura Dowsing was 2nd in the 800M. The Team finished 13th. The U20 Men saw Tom Sharland finish 2nd in the 1500M, Oliver Barrett third in the 400M. The Team finished 11th.The U15 Boys Deonte Green finished 2nd in the Long Jump and Sam Diston finished 4th in the 1500M.The Team finished 14th. Overall the combined U15’s finished 15th and the U20’s finished 11th much improved on last year.

Several athletes done well at the English School Championships held in Nottingham on July 12/13th. In the Senior Boys Jermaine Bernard finished 3rd in the Long Jump with 7.07M and Tom Sharland won the 3000M. In the Inter-Boys Matt Barnes-Smith finished 2nd in the 3000M. In the Inter Girls Jemma Thake finished 4th in the 300M and Laura Dowsing was 4th in the 1500M for the Junior Girls.

The County took part in the combined events Championships at Peterborough on the 29th  September in with the Eastern Athletic Association. Entries were about the same as before. Anna Clayton who broke the U17 womens Record last year went onto to break the Senior Womens record this year well done Anna. Daniel Turner broke the U15 Boys record and Peter Fellingham broke the U20 Men’s record.

Thanks to our faithful team managers, Mrs.K.Mead ( Ladies), Steve Benson ( Senior Men CC), David Cripps ( U15 & U13 Boys CC ) and Graham LeRoy for the (Mens T & F ).

On behalf of the Association I would like to thank Mr.G.LeRoy, our Chairman for his support throughout the year; the Ipswich Borough Council for the facilities at Northgate Sports Centre; our assistant secretaries – Mr.T.Cheatham ( Treasurer); Mrs.J.Sayer ( Minute secretary ); Mrs.S.Cheatham ( Track & Field and Officials ); Ray Wells (Coaching ) Mr.J.Everitt ( Race Walking ) and our committee members; and all other organisations who have assisted with the running of Local athletics during the year.

To end this report may I wish everyone connected with Athletics a most successful 2003. I hope that all our Clubs and athletes will represent our county in the new tracksuit top to show off our county wherever we go. See Karin Mead for more info.

This being my last report as I resigned from this post at the AGM 2002 which was after the cross country season and I must thank Jenny Grimwood who took over half way through the year and look forward to her reports in the future.

We started 2002 with the cross country Championships being held at West Stow Country Park on Sunday January 6th . An excellent course and well marshalled by West Suffolk AC. In the Senior Mens race David Miller of Woodbridge Shufflers won by 8 seconds from James Calvert of Ipswich Harriers. In the Women’s race Sally Eastall who won last year had a comfortable win over Gillian Leathers. Tom Sharland of Ipswich Harriers had an outstanding win in the U20 Mens race. A Special thanks go to Bob Duncan and his many helpers.

The UK CAU Inter-Counties was again held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham on Saturday 9th February 2002. The course was very muddy in places and the course again was ideal for Team Managers. The Senior Mens team finished in 38th place with Robin Coll being our first runner home in 198th. The Senior Womens team finished in 24th place and Sally Eastall being our first runner home in 86th place. In the U20 Mens race we had no team but Tom Sharland had an excellent run finishing in second place. The U20 Womens we did not have any athletes. The U17 Mens team finished in 8th position with Sam Jacobs finishing in 3rd place. The U17 Womens team finished in 26th place and Claire Holmes being our first runner home in 38th place. The U15 Boys team finished 40th with Robert Chenery first Suffolk runner home in 222nd position. The U15 Girls finished 24th place with Sarah Bird finishing in 29th place. The U13 Boys team finished  24th with L.Cocks finishing in 17th place. The U13 Girls team finished 28th with Laura Dowsing in third place.

The English National Championships were held at Ashton Court Estate, Bristol on February 23rd 2002 saw a few County Athletes run on a very cold and wintry day. Ben Spashett and Oliver Barrett in the U17 Mens. Claire Holmes in the U17 Womens.

The English Schools Cross Country Championships were held at Hylands Park, Chelmsford on Saturday 9th March 2002. Tom Sharland won the Senior Boys with Sam Jacobs not far behind. Matt Barnes-Smith finished 3rd in the Junior Boys. Well done to the Lads.

The English Cross Country Relays event continued to be held at Mansfield on November 9th 2002. This year saw the Ipswich Boys finish in 4th place in the U20 Mens Race. They were Oliver Barrett, Sam Jacobs and Tom Sharland who ran the fastest lap in 8.51.The U17 Mens team finished in 13th place with Matthew Barnes-Smith, Paul Graham and Joe Thompson, with Matt running the fastest lap time 9.07. The U15 Girls of Ipswich Harriers finished in 37th place.

The SEAA Inter-Counties match was held on 7th December 2002 at Banbury, Oxfordshire. We had no U23 men and only one in the U17 mens. Alex Wold was our only U15 Boy to complete in 33rd place. In the U13 Girls saw M.O’Hare finished in 4th place and the team finished 12th . The U15 Girls team finished 7th with Laura Dowsing finishing in 4th place. 8.

The Executive Committee proposed that the Annual Fee for Club Affiliation should be increased to £25.

We would prefer to increase the affiliation fee by a little each time so that we don’t have large increases but stay with the rate of inflation. Proposed by Treasurer and 2nd Paul Felton    All in favour
