Andrew Graham (Belgrave Harriers) from Haverhill won the National Boys U13 race Walking Association Championships at Don Valley, Sheffield over 2Km on the road in 10min 50sec, 30 sec ahead of 2nd place N Arnell from Hull on 27th April.

This win meant selection to the England Junior Team for the recent visit to Dublin, Ireland, where he walked well for 4th place in Pheonix Park.

Ottley based Colchester Harriers & Suffolk County Champion Alan Ellam is currently in 2nd place, half way through the 12 race Essex League.

The result of the Suffolk 10 Mile Race Walking Championships, held in conjunction with the Essex, Herts. and Middlesex Championships at the Metropolitan Police Sports Centre, Chigwell on the 24th February 2002.

1st    Alan Ellam            Colchester Harriers AC    85:34

2nd    Ron Wallwork     Colchester Harriers AC    105:05

Suffolk walker Alan Ellam from Ottley won the combined Championship race held from the excellent facilities at the Metropolitan Police Sports Grounds at Chigwell, by over 1 minute from Ilford walker and Essex League Champion Steve Allen, with Neil Loader another Colchester Harrier in 3rd place.

2nd in the Suffolk Championship was former Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Ron Wallwork from Newmarket (20 Mile Walk Jamaica 1966). Ron was awarded a higher honour at the start of the year, as he will soon be visiting the Palace to receive an MBE for services to the community.

Ron last year came home in 3rd but with last years runner up Mick Graham (Belgrave Harriers) from Haverhill, judging at the National Junior Indoor Championships at the NIA in Birmingham, Ron went home with over 1 minute quicker than last year.

(The indoor junior 3000m Walk was won by another Colchester Harrier, Dominic King in 12:24, with twin brother Daniel in 3rd Spot).

For anyone interested in having ago at Race Walking there is a monthly 2000m Track Handicap held at the Garrison Track on Thursday evenings at 7:15 on 28th March, 11th April, 9th May, 20th June 18th July and 15th August. The Handicap are now in their 13th year. The slowest starting off first - younger athletes can do just 800m. These are ideal for any one to come and try Race Walking, and I will be very happy to give as much advice as I can.

The Suffolk County 3000m Race Walk is to be held in the main County Track & Field Championships at Bury 12th May.

There are a number of interested and active walkers in Suffolk, it would be nice if you could all go and boost the numbers in May at the County Championships.
