The Inland Revenue was warned not to go on 'fishing expeditions' when investigating a tax payer during a recent hearing at the Special Commissioners into an IR35 case.

The Inland Revenue's case was thrown out after the Special Commissioners found that the Revenue's assessment was found to be invalid.

EU directive could cost jobs, warns ACCA

The Agency Workers' Directive was approved by the European Commission in March and is currently passing through the European Parliament. If fully endorsed it will become law across the EU in April 2003.

The directive would enable workers employed through employment agencies to claim the same rights as other employees after just six weeks at a company. That could mean extra pay, holiday and other benefits.
