weekly sessions of yoga
The Bihar School of Yoga has made a great contribution to western understanding of yoga, Swami Satyananda Saraswati founded the school in Manger, India in 1963. Swami Satyananda became a student of his teacher Swami Sivananda Saraswati at the age of 20, having studied for 12yrs, he left to travel the length and breath of the Indian sub-continent for 9yrs as a wandering ascetic, to assess the needs of modern man. The Bihar School of Yoga has passed on the teachings to many westerners who have returned to their countries all over the world to set up yoga Centres and spread the word. I was taught by one such group, the Dharma Yoga Centre.
Swami Satyananda believes yoga is for everyone- young/old and fit/weak.
I strongly believe this too, I enjoy teaching in a range of different environments.
I have listed all the classes although some are not open to the general public.
Monday
Belmarsh Prison
I teach in the Health Care Centre of this all category prison in Thamesmeade, with inmates who are suffering with tension, anxiety and depression.
The chance to teach at Belmarsh was created by the Prison Phoenix Trust, a charity that states 'the opportunity for personal growth exists in a prison cell. The Trust encourages prisoners in their spiritual lives through the practices of yoga and meditation, working with silence and the breath.

Tuesday
Tower Hamlets Adult Ed. Seated yoga for 60+

My teacher Julie Friedeberger wrote a book 'Office Yoga' which shows how all the body and mind can be worked from a chair. These ladies are very special, their spirit is incredible, having seen world wars, poverty, hardship and hard work, their light is burning strong as is the life in the community.
City and Islington College, Angel , 4.15-6pm
This class is for teachers of the college and is not open to the general public. Originally set up by a friend Marye who worked at the college teaching English to foreign students. The teachers are committed to their work and work so hard they enjoy greatly a chance to slow down and stretch body and mind.
Wednesday
Hyleford School, Ilford. 1.30-3pm
Sue, a student from my Leytonstone class, invited me to teach her class at the school, the children, aged between 14-16, all have learning difficulties. This session is great fun, always something going on... Very occasionally there are silent moments which are beautiful! With almost one to one assistance in the postures the kids are showing good improvements in coordination and concentration.
