What is The Alexander Technique?
The short answer is a re-education of our whole system - mind and body. This allows us to live effectively and to our full potential despite the massive demands that 21st century living places on us.
A slightly longer answer....
Most of us most of the time live habitually, that is moving and thinking in a group of patterns that we have used repetitively for many years. We learnt most of the basic patterns during our early years (0-6), however often bad habits are adopted later (6-16) and it is these we are not aware of when we use our bodies for the simple tasks in life like walking, standing, sitting, talking, driving, working at a computer etc.
We spend life unaware and this wonderful thing we call a body adapts to deal with whatever is thrown at it, this can continue for years until one day the body begins to fail. We may notice a pain whilst running for a bus or playing sport, now we have a choice, how do we respond to the body's cry for help? Many people will decide to stop that particular activity, others cover the cry for help with pain killers, some will become a helpless victim angry at their body for failing and feel so unlucky, others will talk to experts looking for a solution. Looking for a solution is what brings people to the Alexander Technique.
The Technique howver is far more than just trying to remove pain from the body, it is about moving from living life habitually to living life consciously. This means all aspects of our lives are influenced by this process in a positive way.
