STAR Hit "I could be successful and never be forgotton" A blatant critique of the music industry (see the Manifesto) and a bit of an aberation in the process. Silverman step outside themselves and get swamped by the pop media machine. Comes with free post down-the -pub game Spot the Pop-culture References ;-)....possibly but I can't get the Sugar Cubes 'Hit' out of my head and the illustration at Silverman HQ is an embryo, in which case it's about something entirely different and I'm a silly bugger. Whatever Turns You On "You don't want friends, just people you know" Definitly a downer but mangaing a smile on it's face somehow. The nearest to a 'lighters in the air' moment to date. Beautiful Brown Leather Gloves "Choice can make you weak when you abuse it" I see... a mobile hanging over a childs bed, twisting in the breeze. No gloves for me. I must be missing something. You And Your Mouth "I will be nothing and you will be my witness" Like an ice sculpture called 'Love is...' on a warm spring day. Gets bonus points for the reference to 'Hotel New Hampshire' by John Irving. Keep passing the open windows. Taken With You "Have you ever really wondered why I'm quiet when we're in the same room?" Not a dry eye in the house. This is the sound of surrender and confusion. What's he/she thinking. He/she can't really like me, can they? What am I doing wrong? Why why why won't you kiss me? Magnificent "You're wide- eyed and innocent, wide eyed and magnificent" Balancing 'Hit' this track is a celebrity death-match shock result! Virtual unknown English lass kicks Canadian songstress Alanis' ass. Now that's ironic. darling darling "Absolutely, completely" Silverman's minimalist epic. One day I'll manage to catch all the spoken word bit. Perfect if you're in desperate need of a hug and there's no one around to oblige. Complicated "Please excuse me if I want to be alone sometimes" This is 'Star' s TIAB. Anna+ guitar+ squeeky chair=Bloody fantastic! Makes me wish I'd never heard of Silverman, just so I could discover them again. My Overflowing Ashtray Heart "Don't need no one to break me, I can do that on my own" My personal favourite, bleaker than Blackpool Pleasure Beach on a rainy day in the off season whilst remaining defiantly cheerful in the face of overwhelming odds. Then there's the bass line to die for, the scratchy-whiney guitar and lyrics from desolation alley (the second instance of 'don't need no one to break me' sounds scarily like 'rape me, I can do that on my own' which gives it even more of a kick) and the best title in the world... Why why why isn't it on an album...?. |
