The History Department is following the EDEXCEL Specification
for the new 'AS/A' Level examination/qualification. The first unit to be
examined as part of the 'AS' Level Course could be in January 2001. However the school have opted for a common policy of June 2001 for all subjects.
The New 'AS/A' Level is split into six units. Those students who wish to study
for an 'AS' Level qualification will study three units over the duration of an
academic year. Those students who wish to study for a complete 'A' level will
study six units over two years.
Unit 1:
Russsia in Revolution:1905-1917
This Unit should be examined in June 2001. The exam will last for 1hr 30mins and will count for 40% of an 'AS' qualification and 20% of an 'A' level.

Italy: The Rise of Fascism, 1918-25
* Weaknesses of the Liberal state, 1918-22
* Mussolini, the message and appeal of Fascism, its changing focus 1919 to 1922
* Support for, opposition to, Fascism among different social groups
* The consolidation of Fascist power, 1922-25
Examination

This exam will be taken in the summer of lower VI. It will count as 30% towards the As and 15% towards the A2
This exam will count for 30% of an 'AS'Level qualification and 15% of an 'A' Level.
Unit 3:
Coursework:
'"The Causes of the American Civil War"
This Unit will be examined through coursework which will be based around two questions.
.1. To what extent do the above sources imply that Abraham Lincoln was racist?
2. Was slavery the main cause of the Civil War?
The coursework will count for 30% of an 'AS' qualification and 15% of an 'A'level.
Unit 4:
Individual Study
Pupils may pick a historical controversey of their own choice. They must carefully logg their research and write up their findings.
Unit 5:
Coursework: This coursework assignment should be 2000-2500 words long
and should be due in by June 2002. This will count for 15% of an 'A' level. Unit 6: Synoptic Assessment - The decline of the Liberal Party 1900-1929 This Unit should be examined in June 2002. The exam will
last for 1hr 45mins and will count for 20% of an 'A' Level. The exam board states that: Students will need to be able
to recall, select and deploy knowledge accurately, and communicate their
knowledge and understanding of history in a clear and effective manner. They
must be able to present historical explanations showing an understanding of
appropriate concepts and arrive at substantiated judgements. Students must be
able to interpret, evaluate and use a range of source material and explain and
evaluate interpretations of historical events and topics studied. A note upon Synoptic Assessment: This is the bringing
together of skills and knowledge to demonstrate a good overall historical
understanding. The process involves the 'explicit assessment of understanding of
the connections between the essential characteristics of historical study'.
According to the EDEXCEL Specifications students must be prepared to:

* Recall, select and deploy historical knowledge
accurately, and communicate knowledge and understanding of history in a clear
and effective manner
* Understand the essential characteristics of
historical study which derives from a study of the process of historical
interpretation
* Interpret, evaluate and use a range of source
material
* Explain and evaluate interpretations of
historical events and topics studied
* Assess the significance their historical context
of either events or individuals or ideas, or attitudes and beliefs and the ways
in which they influenced behaviour and action
* Present historical explanations showing
understanding of appropriate concepts and arrive at substantiated judgements
