KS3 National Curriculum History

The Focus Statement found within The National Curriculum in Wales states that pupils should be given 'opportunities to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired at Key Stage 2'. Pupils should be taught, in chronological order, some of the main features from the histories of Wales and Britain during the last millennium.

* Political History
* Economic History
* Social History
* Cultural History

These histories should be placed into context with references being made to European and World History. The history of the locality should also be emphasises along with the experiences of the countries that make up the British Isles.

* Diversity of experience
* Causation (causes of change)
* Change over time
* Spiritual values
* Moral values

Pupils should (throughout Key Stage 3) 'establish their sense of chronology and use and evaluate a range of historical sources and interpretations. They should communicate and record their knowledge and understanding with increasing independence.'

Year 7: Wales and Britain in the Medieval World, c.1000 - 1500
Pupils should be taught:
* Characteristic features of medieval society (especially with reference to Wales)
* Pre-Norman Wales and England c.1000
* The impact of the Normans
* Aspects of medieval society
* The role of the church
* International dimensions within the medieval world
* One study in depth of one international aspect

Year 8: Wales and Britain in the Early Modern World, c.1500 - 1760
Pupils should be taught:
* Some of the major political changes which shaped the history of Wales and Britain
* Some of the major religious changes which shaped the history of Wales and Britain
* Changes in institutions such as the church, the monarchy and parliament and the effects
  these had on Wales
* Either a depth study upon an international aspect of life, or one aspect of its social and
  economic life

Year 9: Wales in Industrial Britain, c.1760 - 1914
Pupils should be taught:
* The social, economic and technological transformation of Wales and Britain during
   Industrialisation
* The effects - social, cultural, religious and political - of industrialisation in Wales and
   Britain
* The responses - social, cultural, religious and political - to industrialisation in Wales and
   Britain
* One in depth topic that is related to the above

Year 9: The Twentieth-Century World
Pupils should be taught:
* Some major events and developments that have shaped the modern world - the impact of
  war, changes in society and significant individuals
* The impact of the above events and developments upon Wales

                     
 

An Aspect of Local History
Pupils should be taught:
* A study of the local community for a defined historical purpose over a specific timespan
  during Key Stage 3
* To make use of locally accessible historical sources
* Where appropriate to deal with matters raised by other study units in the programme of
   study - avoiding duplication with the local study unit undertaken at Key Stage 2

One Historical Theme - in depth
Pupils should be taught:
* One theme from the list below, making contrasts and connections with other examples which illustrate the theme:
i)    Explorations and encounters
ii)   War and society
iii) The world of work
iv)   Revolutions
v)    Frontiers
vi)   Migration and emigration
vii)  Empires
viii) Sport and society

* Chronological Awareness
* Historical Knowledge and Understanding
* Interpretations of History
* Historical Enquiry
* Organisation and Communication
