Wednesday 1st December  Club Night – Watermill Hotel, Bourne End  ¦ 8.30 pm

This is your chance to meet up with members old and new, to book into events and to add some of your own to the first newsletter of 2005. Let’s start as we mean to go on, with plenty of interesting events. They needn’t be expensive, as we will all be watching the pennies after Christmas.

Friday 3rd December  Broomhills Disco 9.00 pm

Bunny Carole invites members to join her at the Broomhills Shooting Club disco, just outside Markyate. Entrance is £3.50, including a light supper, bar and great music.

Friday 3rd December  Court Theatre, Pendley, Tring ®   7.30 pm

Ju Absurd Person Singular by Alan Ayckbourn. Tickets at £7 can be reserved from Michael Edmonds, with a festive theme, this play is “one of Ayckbourn’s funniest, with the humour swinging from gentle comedy to outright slapstick”, so the blurb says. Pendley Theatre Company is an amateur group; Judy B has seen several of their productions, which have all been well performed and very enjoyable. Meet Judy in the bar at 7.30 pm or ring for more information.

Saturday 4th December Full House pre-Christmas Meal  ä 8.00pm                                           

Join Cheryl and her neighbour Nigel M at the Full House pub in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead for a pre-Christmas meal/drink. Drinks are always very good value here, and they are offering a Christmas menu at only £5.99. Book in by Club Night if you would like to dine.

Sunday 5th December Walk, Watermill & Mince Pies! 11.00 am

Shirley and John are leading us this morning from Redbourn Common (park opposite the Cricketers). The walk takes us to Redbournbury Mill, which will be open to visitors - £1.50 adults, 80p concessions. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available, accompanied by carol singing from Ver Singers. Approximately 5 mile, round walk. Suitable footwear needed, as it may be muddy underfoot (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Again you’re spoilt for choice tonight; including our regular events there’s four to choose from. No need to be bored!

Tuesday 7th December          Cinema Evening   ¸Approx. 7.00 pm

See John H at Club Night or give him a ring a day or two before to decide which of the latest releases to see at the Hemel Odeon (see newsletter for contact details).

Tuesday 7th December          Introduction to Yoga   7.30-9.30 pm

Have you thought of trying yoga but not had anyone to go along with? Hilary invites us to join her in the class she attends at Greenways School, Crossways, Berkhamsted, for a taste of yoga. Cost £5.00, bring an exercise mat, towel or blanket and wear loose, comfy clothing. This is the last class before Christmas; why not give it a try now and if you like it make it a regular thing in the New Year when you’ll probably need to lose a few excess pounds!

Wednesday 8th December      Pub Night at the Plough, Belsize 8.30 pm

Join Terry and Barbara for a mid-week drink and chat at this cosy pub in the countryside, between Chipperfield and Sarratt (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Friday 10th December The Watermill Dinner Dance äå7.30 for 8.00 pm

About 30 of us are looking forward to this evening’s dinner dance; many thanks for organising this, Bill.  Robert will buy you a drink! (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Saturday 11th December Christmas Cabaret, Pendley Court Theatre, Tring   8.00 pm

Give us a call or see us at Club Night if you are interested in coming along to this; nine of us have already booked our places. An evening full of variety to include songs, music and sketches. A light hearted look at Christmas to put you into the Christmas spirit. Tickets are £11.50 (£9.50 concessions) including fish and chip supper (see newsletter for contact details).

Sunday 12th December  BYO Sunday Lunch  ä 1.00 pm

Joan and Robert are hosting another Social Friends Sunday Lunch. Bring along cooked food to share – suggestions include lasagne, shepherd’s pie, roast potatoes, pizza, salad or dessert. It would be helpful to know what you are planning to bring to save having too much of the same thing Variety is the spice of life! We will be doing a curry and rice to start you off. Tuesday 14th December  Five Course Christmas Dinner äå   6.45 for 7.00 pm

£15 gets you a 5* luxury, five course dinner. Join Nigel M at Cassio College, Watford. See Nigel at December club night for more information and to book in or give him a ring by Wednesday 1 December (see newsletter for contact details).

                   

Wednesday 15th December  Lick ‘n’ Stick Night     ?     8.00 pm

Gina’s is the  place to be this evening to catch up on the latest gossip and ‘put the newsletter to bed’. Many hands make light work, folding and sticking. Tea or coffee provided (see newsletter for contact details).

Thursday 16th December Folk Music/Pub Night    ¯ 8.30 pm

The Rose and Crown in the St Michaels area of St Albans is the venue for this evening. Come along and listen to the talented folk musicians who meet here every Thursday evening. Alan is our host for this event. Give him a ring if you need directions (see newsletter for contact details).

Friday 17th December Scrabble Evening   8.00 pm

Judy B invites all standards to join our regular group. Bring along your own drink and a small pack of nibbles. Two boards available, and a variation on the theme, Upwords, which is proving very popular (see newsletter for contact details).

 

 

Another date with a choice of activities – will it be the wild west, or eastern cuisine?

 

Saturday 18th December  Cochin Indian Meal ä 7.30 for 8.00 pm

Join Nigel W for Keralan cuisine, Indian food with a difference. The Cochin restaurant in Hemel Old High Street is famous for its fish dishes as well as the more usual lamb and chicken. As it is so close to Christmas, we will need to reserve a table in advance – see Nigel at Club Night or ring to book by 4th December (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Saturday 18th December Country and Western Music, Harpenden ¯8.00 pm

Geoff and Sheila are going along to the Harpenden British Legion Hall for another lively evening of country and western music and dancing. This has proved a very popular event in the past, so get there early to be sure of a seat (see newsletter for contact details).

 

 

Sunday 19th December Walk from Box Moor       11.00 am

Meet John H in the car park on Box Moor near St John’s Church for a walk of about 5 miles. Refreshments at the Fishery Inn on the last leg (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Tuesday  21st December  John’s Birthday Drink 8.30 pm

It’s John H’s birthday so come along and help him celebrate at the Three Blackbirds, Boxmoor.

Sunday 26th December       Boxing Day Walk 11.00 am

Join Adrienne on the Beacon View Walk, a five mile circular walk starting at The Greyhound, Wigginton, which is in the heart of the village, on the Chesham road. This walk takes in Tring Park and a stretch of the canal. Lunch arrangements to be confirmed at Club Night, it being Boxing Day (see newsletter for contact details).

Friday 31st December         New Year’s Eve Party   8.30 pm

Jean invites us to see in the New Year at her home in Berkhamsted. Usual party rules – bring a plate of finger food to share and your own drink (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Regular Events

 

Walkers: have you seen the Dacorum Health Walks flier? They hold short walks from various venues across Dacorum on weekdays if you are available, and one hour walks on Sunday afternoons. See the Events Folder at Club Night for details.

 

Many thanks to Maureen, Chris, Tina and David for hosting our regular weekly events over the past year. If you haven’t joined them yet, why not make it your New Year’s resolution to get fit – see the hosts at Club Night if you need more information.

Mondays 8.00 pm – “Boxmoor Beat”, Boxmoor Playhouse, St John’s Road, Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead.

Join in with Social Friends members and other keen dancers for an evening of Modern Jiving. No need to bring a partner, just come along, take part and meet new people. If it’s a Bank Holiday, check with Maureen (see newsletter for contact details).

 

Tuesdays 7.00 pm – Badminton at Dacorum Sports Centre, Hemel Hempstead

All standards welcome. Meet at 6.50 pm in the entrance hall.

Every Monday & Friday Morning - Lane Swimming @ Hemel Sports Centre

David S says: Swimming is a great activity. It tones your entire body while providing an excellent cardiovascular workout; it strengthens your heart muscle and improves delivery of oxygen to muscles. Swimming is also a relaxing activity. Lane swimming optional and you can swim as little or as much as you like. Cost £1.85 with sport pass, otherwise £3.45.
