After completing Strong Language, Rumley applied for a Lottery grant to make Club Le Monde. One of the assessors was Piers Jackson: "I was attracted to the project partly because with six characters and one location the story was very self contained, but also because, having seen Simon's debut feature Strong Language, and read his screenplay for Club Le Monde, I recognised that here was a singular film maker with acute observation and a distinctive voice, all topped off by a refreshingly impish sense of humour.

"When we attempted to raise the initial budget, the main problem was that there was no screenplay and no 'star' names attached; in the end, almost as an act of defiance at the timidity of the film business, my partners at Screen Production Associates offered to underwrite the project." With SPA directors Douglas Abbott and John Jaquiss on board as executive producers, and Piers himself as co-producer with Rumley, The Truth Game was given the green light.

The actors were cast in July 1999, Simon started rehearsing with them in August; he wrote the screenplay in September and shooting began mid-October.
