navvy
A labourer employed on heavy work such as excavating, trenching, etc.; a contraction of navigator. The name derives from the days of canal construction, as the canals were called navigations.

Over time "navvies" has come to be a demeaning term for Irish laborers, especially those that work on road or rail.
Their Irish origin explains the fact that they "cry for the bridge that doesn't go in the direction of Dublin."
