The White House (shown right) is the official residence of the President of the United States of America, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, District of Columbia. Originally conceived by George Washington as the "President's Palace", the cornerstone was laid in 1792 (not by George Washington, who was in Philadelphia at the time). The second American president, John Adams, became the first occupant in 1800. The name "White House" was first used in 1811, refering to the white paint that covered the grey stone of the mansion. The building was burned by the British in 1814 (towards the end of the War of 1812), and reconstruction began in 1815.
Number Ten refers to Number 10 Downing Street (the famous entrance is shown on the left), the official residence of the Prime Minister (who also holds the title First Lord of the Treasury) of Great Britain. Used as the Prime Minister's residence since 1735, the building is in London's Whitehall area.
