The name Yangtze, which was long applied to the river Chang Jiang in the West, is only a local name for the river as it passes through the Jiangsu province. Located in central China, it is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest river in the world. Rising in western Qinghai (Tsinghai) province, the river flows 5,990 km (3,720 mi) to the East China Sea. The drainage basin of the Chang Jiang covers more than 1,827,000 sq km (705,200 sq mi). The river's mouth discharges 34,000 cu m (1,200,000 cu ft) per second. Ancient texts call the Chang Jiang the "Great River," and it is commonly referred to in China as the "Long River".
