| Juniors Cruise to Victory Over Adults | |||
|
Chester Juniors have won their second game, once again defeating Chester 5 from the main adult club.
The Juniors were already one up as their opponents only arrived with four players. However the adults were soon level when Freddy Campbell defeated Martin Smith in what was a early start.
The remaining three games began just after 7:30pm and the Juniors were soon back in the lead when board three Bharat Sharma defeated Chris Jones. Sharma dropped a piece early on but remained calm and soon regained the piece, then he had a much better game and began to threaten mate. Jones later blundered, capturing a rook for free only to resign when he saw Sharma had an easy mate in one. Bharat Sharma is now top scorer for the team with thr- |
-ee wins from four games.
Elsewhere Marvin Hayes, promoted to board one due the absence of the team's adult captain Chris Fozzard, took on Chester 5 captain Ian Clayton. Clayton played a poor game and by move 13 Hayes had a good positional advantage. This soon extended to a material advantage when Hayes cleverly captured a bishop. By move 22 the game was all over when Clayton resigned after allowing his two rooks to be forked.
In the final game, Alastair Tonge met Barry Kelly. The two had previously met earlier in the season in a what was a close game that was eventually won by Tonge. This time however Tonge was able to gain the advantage much quicker, winning a piece and later pawns as he easied to victory, making the score 4-1.
The win puts Chester Juniors up to
| fifth in the table, and although this was only their second win of the season, the team have been impressive overall and each member of the team has a performance rating that is better than their current grade. Champions Edge Closer to Leaders
Defending Champions Chester 1 have moved to within one point of league leaders Caergwrle after a 4-1 demolition of Colwyn Bay/Llandudno 1 in the Chester & District League last Tuesday.
Chris Doran opened the scoring for Chester, defeating John Blore, then Matthew Demmon made it two with his win over Nick Wilson.
Tim Everrett then assured at least
| a draw for the team with a draw against Brendan Shields.
Then David Bryan defeated Mick Whale on three and Graham Bromley agreed a draw with Jack Taylor to end the match.
Chester should move to the top of the table if they defeat Caergwrle next month.
Chester 2 Lose Again
Struggling Chester 2 have lost again, this time against Rhyl 1. A win from John Sutcliffe and a draw from Paul Watson was not enough as Chester slipped to their fifth defeat in 7 games.
Chester have yet to record a victory this season and relegation seems likely. The team meet Wrexham, whom they drew with, next month.
