Division 2 challengers Holywell suffered a shock home defeat to Chester 4 in the Chester & District League last Monday, despite outgrading their opponents on every board.
![]() Chester got the upper hand in the game on board five when John Vernon captured a loose knight. However his opponent Terry Scott defended well and was able to set up a bind with his |
pawns. In the end, with neither player able to make any real progression, the two players agreed a draw.
However Chester were soon ahead through captain Colin White. White, taking on former Chester player Max Coventry, was able to combine his pieces well to produce a clever checkmate involving a sacrifice.
On board one Gareth Edwards had perhaps the most difficult game as he was paired against Michael Vidler, the third best player in the league, on board one.
In the opening, Edwards played a move that caused Vidler to spend a great deal of time thinking about how to respond. Later though, Vidler was able to get an advantage and won a piece. However, as the game progressed Vidler found it more and more difficult to make up the lost ti-
| -me and as the clock neared 6 o'clock he was still somewhat short of the 35 moves needed to reach the second time control.
The experienced Edwards increased the pressure on Vidler, choosing moves to keep the position complicated. In the end, and despite the piece advantage, Vidler was not able to make 35 moves and lost on time. Edwards later claimed that he had a won game anyway.
After the game on board one had finished, Steve Lloyd playing board two quickly began to force a draw with Haydn Parry to give Chester 3 points and the match.
In the game, Lloyd came out of a close middle game with a pawn advantage as the two players entered the endgame. However, Lloyd found it difficult to convert it to a victory and
| decided to take the safer option, forcing a draw through perpetual check.
In the final game, Chester's Steve Bardell took on Stephen Williams. The game was a fairly close affair and a draw seemed likely. In fact, Bardell offered draw, although this was declined at the time as match result had not been decided. Once the match was decided, the two players entered a king and pawn ending. Bardell had the slightly better position, but decided to offer a draw rather than trying to win. The match ended 3½-1½ to Chester.
