12th Edition - Sunday 3rd February 2008 - www.chesterchess.co.uk
The result seemed unlikely at the start of the game as Chester were fielding one of their strongest possible teams against a weakened Rhyl team, and outgraded them on every board. However, things started to look nervous for Chester when League President John Simmons defeated Tim Everrett on board three, despite being graded 33 points below the Chester player.
Rhyl were soon 2-0 ahead when board four John Sutcliffe resigned to Denis Harvey to give Denis his fifth win in five games, and then the match was over when board five Harry Bullard lost on time to Rhyl's new player Rob Mitchell.
Further misery was dealt by Rhyl when Steve Rush defeated Graham Bromley on board two. Bromley seemed to have chances to win but could not manage it.
Captain and board one David Bryan was the only winner for Chester, defeating Chris Grier. Chester 3 have now slipped to 6th position behind Chester 4, while Rhyl 2 have moved up to the the top, although it is likely they would not accept promotion.
Juniors Crash Back to Earth
Following their 4-1 victory over Chester 5, the Chester Junior team were sent back to earth with a bang with a 4-1 away defeat by Buckley/Mold 2.
Top scorer Bharat Sharma was the first to lose on board 3, then Arthur Fearnall and Alastair Fearnall fell soon after.
Captain Chris Fozzard got a point back with a comfortable win over Gerry Williams. This left Marvin Hayes the chance to salvage some pride back for the juniors in his game with Peter Wimbush.
Hayes played well earlier on, winning a piece, then sacrificed this piece for two pawns. However, this was not enough and Wimbush was able to wiggle out and win the endgame. Hayes was naturally disappointed.
The Juniors will meet Wrexham next in the league, but must first travel to second division Capenhurst for the next round of the handicap knock-out.
