Meanwhile, the game on board four had reached an endgame with Lloyd a pawn up. The game was probably going to end in a draw until Cadigan allowed a king a rook fork. He resigned to make the score 2-2. Sadly any hope for a win or draw was quickly ended when David Bryan resigned, one move away from checkmate. Bryan had played on hoping to get some kind of compensation for his lost piece, although Ball's cautious approach stopped any counterplay.
This defeat will no doubt please nearest rivals Wallasey 1, Chester's final opponents. Although no tables have been released, the two teams could well be neck and neck as Wallasey have dropped at least one point themselves. However Chester must first play Wallasey 2 at home.
Doran wins Frodsham
Chris Doran was the joint winner of the Major section at Frodsham with a score of four out of five, three wins and two draws.
The Tournament was pretty well supported by Chester players. In the Intermediate section, Joe Nemcek finished on 4/5 to claim second prize as Chester narrowly missed out on the team prize.
Also involved in the intermediate were John Sutcliffe won finished on 2½/5, Steve Lloyd and Colin White who finished 2/5, and Ian Clayton 1/5
Finally, in the Minor Chris Jones withdrew with a score of 1/3 and Arthur Fearnall withdrew on ½/3. Meanwhile, Marvin Hayes recovered from a poor start to score 1½ points in his final two games.
