Champions March On Again
Defending Wirral League Champions Chester 1 are another step closer to retaining their championship after an away victory over 2005 winners Hoylake.
The signs looked good for Chester when board five Steve Lloyd won the exchange early on after a strong queenside attack, however it was the game on board three that first ended. David Bryan played the white side of a centre-counter game which soon ended in a quick draw, much to Bryan's disappointment.
Soon after however, Chester took the lead when Matthew Demmon's kingside assault became too much for Dave Picken. Then Steve Lloyd gave Chester at least a draw, make the most of his two extra pawns to win a difficult endgame.
On board one, Ard van Bergen had a tough game against Dave Tebb, and it was Tebb who emerged victorious after grinding his opponent down.
This put board four Graham Bromley in position to win the match for Chester. After realising that only a draw was needed to win the match, Bromley accepted a draw he initially turned down a few moves earlier. The position had boiled down to a bishop and pawns ending, with neither player able to make progress, so the draw was a fair result.
Chester are almost certainly top of the league now after their fourth win in as many games.

4th Team win at Frodsham
Struggling Chester 4 have beaten Frodsham at their new venue, the Gol-
-den Lion, with a score of 3½ points to 1½.
Board two Joe Nemcek gave Chester a good start with a comfortable win over Roy Julian, then Frodsham equalised via Mark Cromwell on board one against David Hulme. Hulme had a great position but blundered the exchange in the middlegame.
On board three Chester's Steve Lloyd took on Mike Dudley. A mistake in the opening allowed Lloyd to win a pawn. As the game went on, the two players began exchanging pieces and Lloyd was able to make his extra pawn count as he found a way to queen a pawn in the pawn endgame.
Next on board five recent addition Steve Bardell gained a good draw against Frodsham's Roger Stephens.
The final game saw Chester captai-
-n Colin White take on Frodsham captain Pat Ridley. The game was a close game, with a perhaps a slight edge to Ridley. As the game got towards the end, with both players struggling for time, it seemed a draw would be the most likely result. Then Ridley made an illegal move. This was spotted by White, but White failed to see that he could win a rook with his next move. However this did not matter as Ridley's clock fell, just seconds before White's, securing the win for Chester.

Tournament Round-Up
Steve Lloyd was pleased with his performance at Bury Rapidplay, scoring 3/6 in the Major (U150) section and achieving a tournament grade 129.
