F.C. EAGER, AB, died 19th December 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Penelope. His ship ran into and Italian minefield, and struck a mine which exploded on the port side abreast of the bridge, but the damage was not severe and she arrived at Malta

A. EAMES, Steward, died 11th January 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Southampton. His ship was part of the escort for Convoy ‘MW5½’ when it was attacked by German Ju-87 dive-bombers from Sicily. She received direct hits, amongst others on the Wardroom and the Petty Officer Mess, fires raged out of control, and she had to be abandoned. Survivors were taken on board the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and the destroyer HMS Diamond

 

S.A. EAMES, AB, died 10th January 1941, on board the destroyer HMS Gallant, which was escorting a Convoy, when it struck a mine that shattered the ship’s bows. Over 60 men were killed and another 25 injured. The ship was irreparably damaged but towed into Grand Harbour and beached beneath Crucifix Hill

 

David EARDLEY, aged 24 years, bachelor, Sick Berth Attendant, Royal Naval Hospital Bighi, married 31st July 1965 to, Jean Margaret WILLSON, aged 20 years, spinster, Navy Nursing Aux., Royal Naval Hospital Bighi, the daughter of George William Willson, Lieutenant, R.N. J. EARNSHAW, Stoker Petty Officer, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Cairo. Part of the escort to Convoy ‘Pedestal’ from Gibraltar to Malta, they were attacked by enemy forces when between Sicily and Tunisia. His ship was struck by torpedoes from the Italian submarine Axum, and had to be sunk by HMS Pathfinder

 

H.O. EAVIS, SA, HMS Welshman, died 1st February 1943. The ship was proceeding to Alexandria when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-617, and sank after three hours with the loss of over 150 Royal Navy officers and men, plus a number of soldiers and airmen who were also on board

 

H.T. EBBAGE, Leading Seaman, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Nigeria. As part of the escort to the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy, the ship came under attack from Italian and German aircraft during the day, but at dusk was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian submarine Axum, and sustained damage, causing her to return to Gibraltar

C.G.J. EGGINGTON, Leading Seaman, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

His ship together with HMS Paladin engaged two Italian Navy destroyers, Cassiopea and Cigno. The latter was sunk but HMS Pakenham sustained serious damage and though taken in tow had to be sunk after an air attack

Part of the escort to Convoy ‘Harpoon’ from Gibraltar to Malta, they were attacked by enemy forces when between Sicily and Tunisia. His ship was badly damaged but taken in tow by the sister ship HMS Partridge though damaged herself. Italian torpedo-bombers attacked the stricken ship and sank her

E. EVANS, Stoker 1st Class, died 23rd July 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Manchester. His ship was part of the escort of Operation ‘Substance’ a Convoy from Gibraltar, when it was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian E-boats Nos. 16 and 22. An oil fuel tank was hit and the adjacent compartments flooded, also her engines were damaged, so she returned to Gibraltar

 

H. EVANS, AB, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruser HMS Kenya, when his ship was part of the escort for the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy

 

H.R. EVANS, Lieutenant, died 12th August 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Foresight. His ship was part of the escort for the vital ‘Pedestal’ Convoy, when it was torpedoed by the Italian Air Force, and sank the next day

 

W. EVANS, AB, died when HMS Kandahar hit a mine and sank 19th December 1941

 

William Henry EVANS, aged 25 years, bachelor, AB, HMS Sandhurst, the son of James Evans, married 2nd July 1924 to, Lilian Elizabeth FRASER, aged 24 years, spinster, of Ponders End, London, the daughter of Edward James Fraser

 

Lieutenant Peter EVENSON, RNVR, the Senior Officer of 20th Motor Torpedo Boat Division. On 19th January 1943 on board MTB 264 he led a raid on Tripoli Harbour with two other MTB’s. They came across three tugs towing an Italian submarine. They attacked and set fire to one tug, which caused all three tugs to abandon the submarine and return inside the harbour. The MTB‘s then turned their attention to the submarine and severely damaged it with torpedoes before returning to Malta. He was awarded the DSC for this action 

 

J. EVERETT, AB, died on the destroyer HMS Jersey when it struck a mine at the entrance to Grand Harbour on 2nd May 1941
