The merchant ship Burdwan had a flooded engine room and her rudder hard over, so Lieutenant Gray, commanding HMS Badsworth was ordered carry out the unpleasant duty of sinking it, causing valuable supplies to be lost

AB Herbert A. GOLDSPINK, C/JX.166690. On 19th January 1943 he took part in a raid by three Motor Torpedo Boats on Tripoli Harbour. They came across three tugs towing an Italian submarine. They attacked and set fire to one tug, which caused all three tugs to abandon the submarine and return inside the harbour. The MTB‘s then turned their attention to the submarine and severely damaged it with torpedoes before returning to Malta

 

A.F. GOMES, Cook, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Cairo. Part of the escort to Convoy ‘Pedestal’ from Gibraltar to Malta, they were attacked by enemy forces when between Sicily and Tunisia. His ship was struck by torpedoes from the Italian submarine Axum, and had to be sunk by HMS Pathfinder

Stoker 2nd Class Norman GREAVES, HMS Manchester. When the ship was torpedoed in 1942 he was picked up and interned by the Vichy French in the Laghouat Camp in Tunisia. On 20th October 1942 he attempted to escape through the perimeter wire after bribing the Arab sentry with a wristwatch, the Arab sentry took the watch then double crossed him and shot him in the back. A riot by the PoW’s was de-fused by Captain Drew R.N. demanding of the French Commandant that medical attention be given to Greaves. However, he was unconscious and never recovered. His burial service was conducted by the Reverend Donald Bruce Walker, the R.N. Chaplain of HMS Manchester

 

Carmel GRECH, Steward, died 20th November 1939, on board the destroyer HMS Gipsy, which struck a mine as she was leaving Harwich, killing 30 members of the crew

 

Francesco GRECH, ‘Chicko’, born in Valletta 5th November 1888, joined the Royal Navy on 31st December 1907, which became his career. Service No. Portsmouth 312527. He held the rank of Stoker Petty Officer on the Tug C.308, during World War II, when it was sunk off Bahar ic Caghaq on 11th May 1942, and he lost his life

Wenzu GRIMA, a crew member of the Mooring Vessel Moor, lost his life on 8th April 1941 when the vessel struck a mine and quickly sank in Grand Harbour

 

Harvey GRIMSHAW, aged 22 years, bachelor, AB, HMS Leverton, the son of Henry Grimshaw, married 10th August 1968 to, Sylvia Katherine Elizabeth POWELL, aged 19 years, spinster, Nurse, the daughter of William Charles Bernard Powell, R.N. retired. This Marriage took place in St.Michael’s and All Angels Royal Navy Chapel HMS St.Angelo

 

Joseph GRISCTI, E/LX20333, died 9th June 1940, on board the Aircraft Carrier HMS Glorious, when his ship was sunk off the Norwegian Coast by the German Battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst

 

F.A. GROOMBRIDGE, AB, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

 

H. GROSE, OD, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Nigeria.

As part of the escort to the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy, the ship came under attack from Italian and German aircraft during the day, but at dusk was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian submarine Axum, and sustained damage, causing her to return to Gibraltar

 

T. GRUNDY, Stoker 1st Class, died 10th January 1941, on board the destroyer HMS Gallant, which was escorting a Convoy, when it struck a mine that shattered the ship’s bows. Over 60 men were killed and another 25 injured. The ship was irreparably damaged but towed into Grand Harbour and beached beneath Crucifix Hill

 

Joseph Anthony GUEST, aged 28 years, bachelor, Chief ERA, Royal Navy, HMS Whitesand Bay, the son of Joseph Anthony Guest, married 9th June 1948, to Jessie Chisholm MacLEAN, aged 30 years, spinster, Petty Officer, Women’s Royal Naval Service, the daughter of James MacLean

 

J.A. GUEST, Lieutenant (E), died 11th January 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Southampton. His ship was part of the escort for Convoy ‘MW5½’ when it was attacked by German Ju-87 dive-bombers from Sicily. She received direct hits, amongst others on the Wardroom and the Petty Officer Mess, fires raged out of control, and she had to be abandoned. Survivors were taken on board the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and the destroyer HMS Diamond

 

H.J.S. GUNN, AB, died 19th December 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Penelope. His ship ran into and Italian minefield, and struck a mine which exploded on the port side abreast of the bridge, but the damage was not severe and she arrived at Malta
