W. McAULAY, Stoker 1st Class, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

F. McCANN, Canteen Assistant, died 23rd July 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Manchester. His ship was part of the escort of Operation ‘Substance’ a Convoy from Gibraltar, when it was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian E-boats Nos. 16 and 22. An oil fuel tank was hit and the adjacent compartments flooded, also her engines were damaged, so she returned to Gibraltar

G.A. MAXFIELD, AB, died 12th August 1942, on board the Aircraft Carrier HMS Indomitable. His ship was part of the escort for Operation ‘Pedestal’ from Gibraltar. In the late afternoon twelve German Ju87 aircraft attacked the carrier and she suffered serious damage from the bombs. One hit the forward AA gun positions killing more than twenty of the Royal Marines detachment. Another landed near the forward lift and penetrated the upper gallery deck and exploded above the main hangar deck. The wardroom was crowded with off-duty pilots and observers when it was wrecked by a bomb killing all the occupants. The ship survived the onslaught and headed for Gibraltar

J. MAYES, OD, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

Anthony MERCIECA, E/LX21860, died 10th April 1940, on board the destroyer HMS Hunter. His ship with others engaged some destroyers of the German Navy in Ofotfjord, Norway, and was successful in torpedoing and sinking two, the Wilhelm Heidkamp and the Anton Schmitt. On their way down the fjord they came under attack from other German destoyers and the Hunter was hit by shellfire and set ablaze, then torpedoed, and sank

Jean Anne MORGAN, aged 28 years, spinster, Leading Wren, Women’s Royal Naval Service, the daughter of Vernon Evan Morgan, married 23rd March 1953, to Alan LIDDELL, aged 21 years, bachelor, Leading Writer, R.N., RNB Camerata, the son of Albert William Liddell

 

R.E. MORGAN, SA, died 23rd July 1941, on board the destroyer HMS Fearless, which was escorting Convoy ‘Substance’ from Gibraltar. His ship was badly damaged by Italian aircraft south of Sardinia, and sunk

 

W.J. MORGAN, Stoker Petty Officer, died on the destroyer HMS Jersey when it struck a mine at the entrance to Grand Harbour on 2nd May 1941

 

E.W. MORRIS, AB, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Bedouin. Part of the escort to Convoy ‘Harpoon’ from Gibraltar to Malta, they were attacked by enemy forces when between Sicily and Tunisia. His ship was badly damaged but taken in tow by the sister ship HMS Partridge though damaged herself. Italian torpedo-bombers attacked the stricken ship and sank her

 

Richard Diamond MORRIS, aged 24 years, bachelor, Leading Seaman, HMS Warspite, the son of George Morris, married 3rd November 1939 to Vera WILLIS, aged 25 years, spinster, Artiste, 598 Blanche Street, Sliema, the daughter of Walter Willis

 

Richard Lionel MORRIS, the son of Mavis Wilhelmina and Walter Morris, ‘Rosetta’, Depiro Street, Sliema, E.R.A., Royal Navy, HMS Devonshire, born 26th March 1935

 

Albert E. MORRISON, Petty Officer 2nd Class, single, aged 25 years, born in Birkenhead, on board HMS Tyne in March 1901

 

T.J. MORTON, Surgeon-Lieutenant, died 11th January 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Southampton. His ship was part of the escort for Convoy ‘MW5˝’ when it was attacked by German Ju-87 dive-bombers from Sicily. She received direct hits, amongst others on the Wardroom and the Petty Officer Mess, fires raged out of control, and she had to be abandoned. Survivors were taken on board the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and the destroyer HMS Diamond

 

R.E.A. MORTON, SB Petty Officer, HMS Welshman, died 1st February 1943. The ship was proceeding to Alexandria when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-617, and sank after three hours with the loss of over 150 Royal Navy officers and men, plus a number of soldiers and airmen who were also on board

 

S. MOSE, OD, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

Hugh Colin Christie MOSSOP, aged 25 years, bachelor, Royal Navy, HMS Phoenicia, the son of John Craig Christie Mossop, married 20th March 1948, to Fay Margaret LISTER, aged 21 years, spinster, the daughter of S. Matthew Lister

 

Hazel MUDD, the daughter of Doris and Harold Mudd, Bramlar House, Strada Marina, Sliema, Royal Navy, born 25th November 1929

 

Royston MUDD, the son of Harold and Doris Mudd, 18 Rue D’Argens, Sliema, Petty Officer R.N., born 6th September 1928

 

Maureen Joan MULDOON, the daughter of Lilian Maud and Clifford Muldoon, Camela House, Blanche Street, Sliema, Stoker Petty Officer, Royal Navy, born 31st December 1934

 

Henry MULLIGAN, Steward, EL/X22037, died 25th November 1941, on board the Battleship HMS Barham, which was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean by the German U-Boat U-331. His ship exploded killing 862 members of the crew

 

S.J. MULLIS, AB, died when HMS Kandahar hit a mine and sank 19th December 1941

 

Edward MUNDAY, Stoker 2nd Class, C/SKX 1599, lost his life in the submarine Upholder on 14th April 1942

Christopher John MURPHY, aged 28 years, bachelor, P.O., HMS Chrysanthemum, the son of Cornelius Murphy deceased, married 3rd April  1926 to, Eveline GABRIEL, aged 27 years, spinster, the daughter of John Gabriel

 

John  MURPHY, Yeoman of Signals, died 4th April 1942, on the destroyer HMS Kingston. The ship was later taken into the drydock for repair where she was severley damaged by German bombing on 11th April, and was subsequently sunk as a blockship

 

John Michael James MURPHY, aged 28 years, bach, Engineer Lieutenant, R.N., the son of John Murphy, married 2nd October 1903 to, Florence CAMPBELL, aged 30 years, spinster, the daughter of Francis Beresford Campbell

 

Norman Christopher MURPHY, born 7th November 1927, the son of Eveline and Christopher John Murphy, Petty Officer, Royal Navy

 

Joseph MUSCAT, Steward, E/LX22991, died 4th August 1941, HMS Medway

 

Diane MUSPRATT, the daughter of Reginald and Very Muspratt, 54 Via Cospicua, Casal Paola, Leading Signalman, R.N., born 27th June 1938. She died in King George V Hospital 30th July 1938
