His ship was struck by torpedoes from the Italian submarine Axum, and had to be sunk by HMS Pathfinder

 

A.R. PAGE, S.A., died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Nigeria. As part of the escort to the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy, the ship came under attack from Italian and German aircraft during the day, but at dusk was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian submarine Axum, and sustained damage, causing her to return to Gibraltar

 

L.F. PAGE, Sub-Lieutenant, died 11th January 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Southampton. His ship was part of the escort for Convoy ‘MW5½’ when it was attacked by German Ju-87 dive-bombers from Sicily. She received direct hits, amongst others on the Wardroom and the Petty Officer Mess, fires raged out of control, and she had to be abandoned. Survivors were taken on board the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and the destroyer HMS Diamond

In January 1953, Seaman George PAPPS, HMS Tyne, got into the driver’s seat of a taxi parked near the Royal Navy Picket House in Valletta, and drove off down the steps near Kingsgate, then down Kingsway knocking down Seaman George Wilson of HMS Indomitable. As the car reached St.John’s Street, Police Constable F.Bartolo jumped onto the running board and forced the car to stop. Charges were brought against Papps.

F.A. PHILLIPS, OD, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

J.N. POINGDESTRE, ERA, died 24th March 1942, on the destroyer Southwold. She was towing the cargo ship Breconshire part of convoy MW.10 from Alexandria that had been attacked earlier that day, when she struck a mine off Zonqor Point

E.E. POOLEY, OD, HMS Welshman, died 1st February 1943. The ship was proceeding to Alexandria when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-617, and sank after three hours with the loss of over 150 Royal Navy officers and men, plus a number of soldiers and airmen who were also on board

 

J.D. POOLEY, Midshipman, died 23rd July 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Manchester. His ship was part of the escort of Operation ‘Substance’ a Convoy from Gibraltar, when it was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian E-boats Nos. 16 and 22. An oil fuel tank was hit and the adjacent compartments flooded, also her engines were damaged, so she returned to Gibraltar

 

Charles Guy POPE, aged 28 years, bachelor, Writer, HMS Egmont, the son of Charles Pope retired, R.N., married 8th September 1915 to, Gertrude May JAMES, aged 23 years, spinster, the daughter of  David James

Paul PORTANIER, Steward, E/LX22369, died 5th April 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Cornwall, when his ship was sunk by Japanese aircraft in the Indian Ocean

Anthony PORTELLI, Petty Officer Steward, E/LX21880, died 8th April 1940, on board the destroyer HMS Glowworm. His ship encountered the German invasion force for Norway and rammed the German cruiser Admiral Hipper, but was sunk by gunfire from the German ship. Only 38 of the crew survived. Lieut-Commander Roope, the C.O. of the Glowworm  was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross

 

Ernest Reginald George PORTER, aged 23 years, bachelor, Leading Writer, HMS Woolwich, the son of Edward Ernest Porter, married 10th November 1938 to Evelyn Mary HEANEY, aged 24 years, spinster, of Cambridge House, Birkirkara, the daughter of James Heaney, R.N.

 

E.J.W. POTTER, S.A., died 11th January 1941, on board the cruiser HMS Southampton. His ship was part of the escort for Convoy ‘MW5½’ when it was attacked by German Ju-87 dive-bombers from Sicily. She received direct hits, amongst others on the Wardroom and the Petty Officer Mess, fires raged out of control, and she had to be abandoned. Survivors were taken on board the Cruiser HMS Gloucester and the destroyer HMS Diamond

F.E. POWELL, SBA, died 15th June 1942, on board the destroyer HMS Airedale. His ship was part of the escort for the Convoy ‘Vigorous’ from Alexandria, protecting eleven merchant ships. During the afternoon of the 15th the Convoy was attacked by German dive-bombers, and no less than twelve aircraft targeted HMS Airedale, and left it a smouldering wreck. The after end was completely gone and it is believed that her own ammunition or depth charge store had exploded

R. POWELL, Band Corporal, died 12th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Nigeria. As part of the escort to the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy, the ship came under attack from Italian and German aircraft during the day, but at dusk was hit by torpedoes fired by the Italian submarine Axum, and sustained damage, causing her to return to Gibraltar

W.A. POWIS, Petty Officer Stoker, died 13th August 1942, on board the cruiser HMS Manchester. On escort duty with the ‘Pedestal’ Convoy his ship was badly damaged by enemy aircraft, and later sank. A large number of the crew were rescued by the destroyer HMS Eskimo

 

R.A. POWLING, Stoker 1st Class, died 26th March 1942, on the destroyer HMS Legion. She was moored in French Creek when she received a direct hit from bombs dropped by German aircraft

 

Peter Burton PRATT, aged 27 years, bachelor, Lieut-Commander, RNVR, Royal Naval Air Station Ta Kali, the son of Francis Josiah Pratt, Clerk in Holy Orders, married 22nd December 1944 to, Olwen Mary McCALL, aged 25 years, spinster, Officer, WRNS, the daughter of Thomas McCall

R.C. PRICE, AB, died when HMS Kandahar hit a mine and sank 19th December 1941

 

S.G. PRICKETT, Chief ERA, died 14th June 1942, on board the Cruiser HMS Liverpool. His ship was part of the escort for the ‘Harpoon’ convoy, when it came under attack from enemy aircraft, and was damaged. The engine room was hit and twelve men there were killed

 

R.C. PRINCE, AB, died 22nd March 1942, on the destroyer HMS Kingston. The ship was later taken into the drydock for repair where she was severley damaged by German bombing on 11th April, and was subsequently sunk as a blockship

 

E.A. PRIOR, AB, died 12th May 1941, HMS Hero

 

J.A. PRITCHARD, AB, died 10th January 1941, on board the destroyer HMS Gallant, which was escorting a Convoy, when it struck a mine that shattered the ship’s bows. Over 60 men were killed and another 25 injured. The ship was irreparably damaged but towed into Grand Harbour and beached beneath Crucifix Hill

Frank PULLEN, Ord. Telegraphist, D/JX.236959. On 19th January 1943 he took part in a raid by three Motor Torpedo Boats on Tripoli Harbour. They came across three tugs towing an Italian submarine. They attacked and set fire to one tug, which caused all three tugs to abandon the submarine and return inside the harbour. The MTB‘s then turned their attention to the submarine and severely damaged it with torpedoes before returning to Malta
