BIGHI NAVAL HOSPITAL CEMETERY
===========================

Admiral Lord Nelson realised that there was a need for medical care for the large number of British seamen now based with the Mediterranean Fleet, since he had remarked “ the preservation of the health of the Seamen is on all occasions......of the utmost consequence and importance to the Country”.
He sent the Physician to the Fleet and Inspector of Hospitals, Dr. John Snipe to Malta with the purpose of finding a suitable site, since the small Naval hospital in Birgu was not really ideal, and some seamen had to be sent to the Army hospital in Valletta.
Together with Sir Alexander Ball, Dr. Snipe visited the Palace of Bichi, and found it the most desirable location. He wrote to Nelson on 9th December 1803, that it had a good supply of fresh fruit, especially citrus fruits, and sufficient land surrounding it to cultivate green vegetables.
It was rather small, and could only house around 160 patients, and he suggested the building of additional accommodation so as to meet the needs of 400 to 500 sick seamen, together with a dispensary, kitchen, wash houses, etc.
The foundation stone of the new buildings was laid by Vice Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm on 23rd March 1830, and it was in 1832 that the enlarged Bighi Naval Hospital was opened.
A 1965 biography of Sir Thomas Spencer Wells, the eminent surgeon, written by John A. Shepherd, includes the following paragraphs:
"The visitor to the Naval Hospital at Malta, if he follows an unobtrusive sunk path down from the hospital and eastwards, will find a broken gate leading to a secluded and rather neglected cemetery. This should be visited in May when the island is a profusion of scented flowers and shrubs, soon to wither into a drab brown summer landscape.
Here lie the sailors who died on the Malta station in the nineteenth century. The stones are well preserved although some have been shattered by the bombs of the later war, and the inscriptions, varying from the most ponderous Victorian eulogies to rhymes which often verge on doggerel, can be clearly deciphered. The high mortality in the Fleet is all too evident.
Distinguished Admirals under their elaborate temples in perfect classical taste, lie equal with the humblest bugle boy, under his simple memorial touchingly subscribed for by his shipmates. In many instances the cause of death is recorded, often in gruesome detail, the fall from the mainmast, the burns from the boiler explosion, but more often the dread cholera or other epidemic fever of the station. Many doctors are buried here and this testifies to the high mortality of the medical officers ashore and afloat in Wells' period of service."
The hospital cemetery no longer exists, it was flattened in the early 1970's when a new wide road, Triq il Missjoni Taljana, was built. As can be seen on the plan, the large oval traffic island for the new road was located in the middle of the cemetery. Bighi Naval Hospital itself was closed down at the end of 1970.
Three gravestones in Plot D at the Kalkara Naval Cemetery, which is about one mile away, refer to Bighi Hospital cemetery.
Grave No.846. The gravestone reads:

IN THE CHURCH OF ST.OSWALD ROYAL NAVAL HOSPITAL MALTA”
The whereabouts of the memorial book of St. Oswald mentioned on this gravestone No. 846 is unknown.
Grave No.849 The gravestone reads:
“REMOVED FROM BIGHI NAVAL CEMETERY
DECEMBER 1968 AND RE-INTERRED HERE
14TH JANUARY 1969”
Grave No.851 The gravestone reads:
“REMOVED FROM BIGHI NAVAL CEMETERY,

The names shown on Graves Nos.849 and 851 are included in the list below.
