As he started to climb down his weight was too much and the pipes came away from their fastenings. He fell to the ground and pieces of pipes fell around him. The fall was from such a height that he was killed on the spot. His funeral was held on the 17th.

Sapper GILLIES, Royal Engineers. He was endeavouring to recover a torpedo lost outside Grand Harbour. The depth was extreme but he was a very powerful man and had managed to find the torpedo, and signalled that he had done so. By some accident, the apparatus send down to be attached to the torpedo fouled his life line with a result that the became unconscious. He was quickly brought to the surface and taken to the Station Hospital, where he died two hours later. His funeral was held on 8th November 1900

He arrived in Malta on 29th October 1940, four months after Italy declared war and the island was under heavy bombing by enemy aircraft. He served there throughout the hazardous and exhausting conditions of the three year Siege and during that time withstood over 3,100 air raids. He moved from Malta to Italy on 29th October 1943, and was killed in action on 25th January 1944, aged 31 years. He left a widow, Ellen Hogan, nee Owens, who he had married at St. Anthony’s Church, Liverpool on 28th March 1937, and a five year old son Bernard. He is buried at the Minturno War Cemetery about fifty miles north of Naples

T.H. WEST, Schoolmaster, Royal Army Education Corps, died 8th February 1905. His funeral was held on 10th. All the schools closed for that afternoon, and all the schoolmasters attended the funeral, as well as representatives from the various regiments. The children of the Elder School, Ricasoli, led the singing and an organ was transported to the cemetery for this occasion. The service was carried out by the Reverend G.A. Hatton, Senior Chaplain to the Forces. He left a widow and seven children
