Kalkara Naval Cemetery
A
metal plate fixed to the wall at the entrance to this cemetery has a description
of Malta’s wartime experiences, and says that there are nearly 2,000
servicemen from the First World War, and 1,500 from the Second World War, buried
in cemeteries on the island of Malta.
For Kalkara Naval Cemetery it shows these figures:
World War I 477 Graves
World War II 719 Graves
Plus some 2,500 graves for those men, women and children who died outside the wartime periods.
Within
this cemetery are also two Memorials from WWI, one for men of the Japanese Navy,
and the other for German Prisoners-of-War.

Men
who died as a result of other calamities were also buried here.
Explosion
in the Dockyard.
A
serious accident occurred on 5th October 1915 at the Naval Ordnance Department
of H. M. Dockyard. An explosion took place in one of the tents occupied by some
fifty men of the Royal Malta Artillery who were engaged in filling hand
grenades. The explosion was followed by a second and yet a third in quick
succession. Every assistance was rendered immediately by the men in the
Dockyard, seamen from the ships lying in the Creek, and by French sailors. A
Chaplain belonging to the French Navy administered the last rites to the dying.
The injured men were taken to the Bighi Royal Naval Hospital.
The
final list of casualties was sixteen killed and thirteen injured.
Those who died were from No.1 Company, 1957 Sergeant A.Pace, 1571 Gunner G.B.Dalli, 2934 Gunner G.Borg, 2837 Gunner P.Griscti, 2859 Gunner G.Demicoli, 2849 Gunner G.Tanti, 2876 Gunner P.Caruana, 3193 Gunner Fidele Barbara.

HMS Russell
This battleship was laid down at Jarrow on 11th March 1899, and launched in February 1901. Her length was 429 feet overall, beam 75½ feet, draught 26½ feet. With a displacement of 14,000 tons, she had a speed of over 19 knots, making her one of the fastest warships afloat of her time.
Rear-Admiral R.S.Fremantle was flying his flag in HMS Russell, Captain W.Bowden Smith, when she arrived off Malta on the night of 26th April 1916. Due to her late arrival entry to the harbour was refused and the ship was forced to circle around off-shore. Next morning, when about five miles from Grand Harbour, she hit two mines, which had recently been laid by the German submarine U-73.
The ship remained afloat for about twenty minutes before turning turtle, and her hull was visible for a short time before she sank beneath the waves. The survivors numbered 24 officers and 676 men, but 124 men lost their lives in the tragedy. The rescued men were taken to Bighi Royal Naval Hospital for medical examination, and some later died there.
On
the morning of 15th February 1935 a Royal Air Force Flying Boat, K.3595, left
Naples for the Calafrana RAF Base in Malta, en route from England to Singapore,
but at about 11.15 a.m. due to fog it crashed into a hillside near Messina,
Sicily, and burst into flames.
All on board were killed. They were:
|
Flight-Lieutenant Beatty Flying Officer Forbes Sergeant Willis Corporal Bailey |
LAC W.Wallace LAC C.N.Allen LAC Rees ACI Wogan |
Mr.E.Penn,
a civilian with the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.
Their bodies were brought from Sicily to Malta by HMS Durban, for interment in Kalkara cemetery.
When
older cemeteries on Malta were re-developed for other purposes, any remains were
brought to Kalkara cemetery, and re-interred in mass graves.
(a) Here buried are those members of the British Services and their families who died between 1865 and 1913 and were formerly interred in Rinella Military cemetery.
(b)
Grave No. D. 846. The gravestone says: This stone stands in memory of those
originally interred in the cemetery of the Royal Naval Hospital, Bighi, in the
years 1846 to 1901. Their names are forever recorded in a memorial book in the
church of St. Oswald, Royal Naval Hospital, Malta.
(c) Grave No.D.849. The gravestone says: Removed from Bighi Naval Cemetery December 1968, and re-interred here 14th January 1969.
(d) Grave No.D.850. The gravestone says: This grave contains the remains of unknown persons originally interred at the old British Services Cemetery, Floriana, during the period 1801 to 1825.
(e) Grave No.D.851. The gravestone says: Removed from Bighi Naval Cemetery December 1966, and re-interred here 25th March 1967.
