GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME

The Good Citizen Dog Scheme is the largest dog training programme in the UK. Its aim is to promote responsible pet ownership by teaching dog owners practical dog training skills, which are used in everyday life situations. The Scheme also helps enhance a dog owner's relationship with their dog and to make the community aware of the benefits of dog ownership. The Scheme incorporates four award levels . Each award is a natural progression and aims to build understanding and knowledge for both dog and owner

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FOOD, TREAT, TITBITS & TOYS - Treats or Toys should not be used during each exercise under test, only between exercises (although not to an excessive extent). If a dog will not perform the exercise without the use of food or toys it should be deemed 'not- ready'.

RE TAKING THE TEST - When re-taking a Good Citizen Test - all exercises must be completed, not just an exercise that was deemed 'not-ready' before.

SECOND ATTEMPTS ON EXERCISES UNDER TEST - Second attempts are generally not permitted. however, in exceptional circumstances, at the examiner's discretion the examiner may request an exercise to be repeated.

USE OF A MUZZLE, HALTI OR HEAD COLLAR - Muzzles cannot be used in any Good Citizen Test. With regard to Haltis and Head Collars, the examiner should satisfy themselves that when the Halti/Head Collar is removed the dog will remain under control.

DOG IDENTIFICATION DISCS - Any dog taking part in a Good Citizen Test must wear an identification disc. The law states that any dog walked in a public place must wear a collar with identification displayed on, or attached to, it, also the information required on an ID disc is the name and address of the owner. Other information is optional.

ROSETTES - Rosettes and certificates are awarded free of charge for the Puppy Foundation and Bronze Awards only. Silver and Gold Award achievers can purchase a silver coloured dog tag (£2.00), Silver Award Rosette (£2.50), Gold colour pin badge (£2.00) or gold Award rosette (£2.50)
