Grandfather

George GILBERT (1871 -1962)

Born 21 August 1871, the son of George and Mary Ann, at Bedonwell, Erith.

He married, on 25 December 1896, at All Saints Church, Belvedere, Kent, when aged 25 years; Eliza Julia HUNT.  He lived at 18 Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere, and worked as a labourer.  They had children: George, Charles, Thomas, Mary, Margaret and William.

At the time of the 1901 Census, he and Eliza lived at 13 Grosvenor Road, Belvedere.  He worked as a plasterer.  Also living with them was Eliza’s brother, Charles Thomas HUNT  (aged 18, who worked as a plasterers labourer - presumably assisting George - and who had been born at Greenwich) and their nephew, Walter HUNT (aged 3, also born at Greenwich).

In 1904, at the time of the birth of his son, Thomas, he lived at 4, Grovesnor, Road, Belvedere, Kent.

He completed the Census schedule to show that on the night of 2 April 1911 he was aged 39 years and worked as a plasterer.  He was married to Eliza Julia, aged 38 years, to whom he had been married for 14 years, and they had had six children, of whom five were still alive: George, aged 9 years; Charles Henry, aged 8 years; Thomas, aged 6 years; Mary Amelia, aged 5 years; and Margaret Agnes, aged 9 months.  They lived at 7, Prospect Place, Upper Grove Road, Belvedere, Kent, a dwelling consisting of five rooms, with Charles Thomas HUNT, aged 28 years, a general labourer (Eliza’s brother) and his son, Walter Thomas, aged 15 years (source: RG14 PN 3755 RG78 RD43 SD3 ED2 SN237)

Jenkin’s local directories shows that a George Gilbert lived at 18, Bedonwell Hill in 1898, 1903 and 1905, but this may have been George’s father of the same name.  But they also show that a George Gilbert lived at 5, Bedonwell Hill in 1898.  In the 1903 edition, there is also a George Gilbert living at 1, Lessness Road.  In the 1905 edition, there was another George Gilbert living at 51, Upper Abbey Road, and in the 1909 edition there were entries for other George Gilberts at 5, Barnfield Road and at 5, Upper Abbey Road as well as someone listed simply as G Gilbert at 7, Upper Abbey Road.  If you are able to clarify this, please mail us.

In 1932, lived at 117 Pickford Lane, Bexleyheath, Kent and worked as a plasterer.

He died, 22 June 1962, at the Brook Hospital, Greenwich, Kent.  Immediately prior to his death, he had lived at 11, Hengist Road, Erith, Kent, and his death was registered by one of Jan’s uncles.

Great-grandfathers

George GILBERT (1843 -1911)

He was born 27 August 1843 at Bedonwell, Erith, Kent, the son of Henry and Ann.  Married Mary Ann ELLIS on 2 December 1867 at the Parish Church, East Wickham, Kent (we think this is probably St Michael’s Church).  He worked as a plasterer.

At the time of the 1871 Census, he worked as a plasterer and Mary worked as a laundress.  They lived at 3 Salter’s Cottages with their children: Harriet (aged 3) and Anne (aged 1).  If you know more about Harriet or Anne, please mail us.

At the time of the 1881 Census, he lived at 18 Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere with Mary Ann and worked as a plasterer.  They lived there with their children: Harriet (aged 13), George (aged 10), Alice (aged 7), Clara (aged 5), Henry (aged 3) and Frederick (aged 1).  If you know more about Clara or Henry, please mail us.

At the time of the 1891 Census, he still lived at 18, Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere with Mary Ann, and worked as a plasterer.  They lived there with their children: George, (aged 19, a blacksmith), Alice (aged 16), Clara (aged 14), Harry (aged 14), Freddy (aged 11), Charles (aged 9), William (aged 5), Margaret (aged 3) and John (aged 2).  If you know more about Clara, Harry, Charles, William, Margaret or John, please mail us.

At the time of the 1901 Census, he lived at Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere with Mary and worked as a plasterer.  They lived there with their children: Henry (aged 22, a plasterer), Charles (aged 18, a plasterer), William (aged 16, a plasterer) and Margaret (aged 13).

At the time of the marriage of his daughter, Alice, in 1903, he appears to have still worked as a plasterer and to have lived at 18, Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere, Kent.  At the time of the marriage of his daughter, Margaret, in 1909, he appears to have still worked as a plasterer and to have lived at 5, Barnfield Road, Belvedere, Kent.

H E Richardson completed the Census schedule on his behalf to show that on 2 April 1911, he was aged 67 years and worked as a plasterer.  He had been married to Mary Ann, aged 63 years, for 44 years, and had had twelve children, of whom nine were still living.  He lived at 6, South Terrace, Bedonwell, Belvedere, Kent, a dwelling consisting of five rooms, with his son, Frederick, a widower, aged 31 years, a plasterer; his son, Charles, single, aged 29 years, a plasterer; his son, William Edward, single, aged 24 years, a labourer at an electrical cable factory; and his granddaughter, Gertie Alice, aged 7 years (source: RG14 PN 3755 RG78 PN142 RD43 SD2 ED15 SN154).

He died, 27 June 1911, at 6, South Terrace, Bedonwell Hill, Belvedere, Kent.  L.J.J. Barnes, M.D., certified death caused by vascular heart disease following dropsy from which he had suffered for two months prior to his death.  His son, George, of the same address, was present at the death and informed the registrar on the same day.

Jenkin’s local directories shows that George Gilbert lived at 18, Bedonwell Hill in 1898, 1903 and 1905, but this may have been George’s son of the same name.  But they also show that a George Gilbert lived at 5, Bedonwell Hill in 1898.  In the 1903 edition, there is also a George Gilbert living at 1, Lessness Road.  In the 1905 edition, there was another George Gilbert living at 51, Upper Abbey Road, and in the 1909 edition there were entries for other George Gilberts at 5, Barnfield Road and at 5, Upper Abbey Road as well as someone listed simply as G Gilbert at 7, Upper Abbey Road.If you are able to clarify this, please mail us.

The 1881 Census gives her place of birth as York, and her age as 38.

At the time of the 1891 Census, she worked as a laundress and lived at 77 Percival Road, Enfield and her marital status is given as widowed.  She lived there with her children: Emma (aged 18, born at Acton) and John (aged 13).  This Census gives her place of birth as being Yorkshire.

She died, on 26 December 1897, at 77 Percival Road, Enfield at the age of 52 years.  Her death was due to the perforation of a gallstone and peritonitis.  Her son, William, of the same address, gave the information to register the death.  The certificate confirms that she died as a widow.

Great-great-grandfathers

Henry (c. 1809 -1880)

It is possible, although we have yet to confirm it, that Henry was baptised on 25 December 1810, the son of Henery and Esther.

The International Genealogical Index shows that a Henry Gilbert married Ann Brooks on 13 July 1834 at Erith, Kent, and this is corroborated by the Thames Riverside Parish Index for St. John the Baptist Erith (1801-1873), compiled by R. J. Cottrell (we are grateful for this information, supplied in an Email from Judith GILBERT [not known to be related] of Berkshire).

At the time of the 1841 Census, he lived at Erith, Kent and worked as a labourer.  He lived with his wife, Ann, and their children: William, aged 6 years; John, aged 4 years; Mary, aged 2 years and Henry, aged 1 month (source: PRO ref: HO 107 / 482 / 12, folio 12, page 16).

At the time of the 1851 Census, he lived with Ann and worked as an agricultural labourer.  Living with them were their children: John (aged 14), Mary (aged 12), George (aged 8), Elizabeth (aged 8), Henry (aged 6) and Thomas (aged 8 months).  If you know more about Mary or Elizabeth, please mail us.

At the time of the 1861 Census, he lived at 96 Allen’s Cottages, Erith with Ann, and worked as an agricultural labourer.  They lived there with their son George (aged 17, a labourer), Elizabeth (aged 17) and Thomas (aged 11, an errand boy).  If you know more about Elizabeth, please mail us.

When his daughter, Elizabeth, married in 1866, he worked as a labourer.

At the time of the 1871 Census, he lived at 106 Bexley Road, Erith with Ann and worked as a potatoes dealer.  Also at that address, at least when the Census was taken, was their son, Henry (aged 24) and Elizabeth (aged 22) who was described as a visitor, but who was presumably Henry’s wife.  If you know more about Elizabeth, please mail us.

We believe that he died on 29 April 1880 at Garden Cottage, Bedonwell, Erith, Kent, although the age of 67 years as recorded when his death was registered is slightly inconsistent.  His son, Henry, provided the information to the registrar and J. Elliot, M.R.C.S, certified the cause of death as ‘morbus cordis’ (heart disease).

At the time of the 1871 Census, he lived at 27, Torrs, Terrace, Deptford, Kent, and worked as a cooper,  His place of birth is given as Rotherhithe, Surrey, and his age as 59 years.  He lived there with his wife, Eliza ,aged 53 years, also born at Rotherhithe, and working as a laundress and their children: William, aged 28 years, also born at Rotherhithe, and working as a factory labourer; Henry , aged 24 years, also born at Rotherhithe, and working as a cheesemonger; Thomas , aged 21 years, also born at Rotherhithe, and working as a leather cutter; Eliza, aged 19 years, also born at Rotherhithe, and working as a domestic servant; Mary , aged 17 years, also born at Rotherhithe; and James , aged 15 years, born at Deptford, Kent, a scholar (source: PRO ref. Great-great-grandmothers

Ann GILBERT, née BROOKS (c. 1817 –1889?)

It is possible that this Ann was the same person who was baptised at Crayford, Kent on 19 October 1817, the daughter of William John and Elizabeth.

She made her mark when she registered the birth of George in 1843.

At the time of the 1881 Census, she lived, as a widow, at 2, Cottages at back of Bedonwell Road, Erith, Kent.  She lived there with her niece, Alice MORRISH, aged 11 (source: PRO ref. RG11 piece 0863 folio 135 page 47).

We have obtained the death certificate for an Ann GILBERT, a widow aged 76 years, who died 25 February 1889 at 30 Pier Road, Erith, Kent of cardiac vascular disease.  The informant of this death appears to have been Ann BOUCH, a niece, who lived at 7 Battle Road, Erith, Kent.  However, the 1891 Census shows that an Ann GILBERT, a widow aged 76 years born in Crayford, Kent, who lived on her own means, was at 21, Albert Road, Erith, Kent (source: PRO ref. RG12 piece/folio 12/638 page 49).

William John BROOKS

It is possible that he was baptised on 11 September 1785, was at Foots Cray, Kent, the son of John and Jane, or that he was baptised on 28 July 1793 at Deptford, Kent, the son of Abraham and Elizabeth.

It is possible that he married Elizabeth and had children:   Ann, baptised 19 October 1817; John, baptised 26 September 1819; Mary Ann, baptised 23 December 1821; Abraham, baptised 8 February 1824; James, baptised 17 February 1827; William, baptised 26 February 1832; Sarah, baptised 21 June 1835 and Harriet, born 7 March 1838 and baptised 1 April 1838 (source: British Vital Records Index).

This family seems likely to be the one recorded in the 1841 Census as comprising William, an agricultural labourer, aged 50 and his wife, Elizabeth, aged 45 plus children: James, aged 14; William, aged 10; Sarah, aged 6 and Harriet, aged 3.  This family lived at Saw Mill Lane, Crayford, Kent (source: PRO ref. HO107 piece 481 folio 6 page 4).

John subsequently emigrated to South Africa, and served in the army there.  He married, and named his first child James Gilbert.  There is family still living in South Africa (the information in this paragraph comes from an Email received from a lady living in Sydney, Australia, who is a cousin of the relative of John Brooks living in South Africa).

At the time of the 1871 Census, she lived at Cock Green, Great Parndon, Essex and her age is recorded as being 32 years.  She lived there with her husband, George, an agricultural labourer who had been born in Great Parndon (age indistinct, because of a clerk’s tally mark) and their children: Sarah Ann, aged 9 years; Henry, aged 8 years; William, aged 6 years, and Mary, aged 18 months (source: PRO ref: RG10 1641/99).

At the time of the 1881, she lived at Cock Green, Great Parndon, Essex and her age is recorded as being 42 years.  She lived there with her husband, George, an agricultural labourer (woodman) who had been born in Great Parndon, and whose age was recorded as 43 years.  They lived there with their children: William, aged 15 years, an agricultural labourer; Harriet, aged 11 years, a scholar; Arthur, aged 8 years, a scholar; Kate, aged 4 years and Frederick, aged 1 year (source: PRO ref. Henry SHEPPARD (c. 1842 -?)

We believe that he married, between 1 October and 31 December 1869, in the Epping registration district; Sarah HAGGER (source: GRO index of marriages, volume 4a page 111).

We believe that he may have lived at Summers Lodge, Great Parndon, Essex, at the time of the 1871 Census, although the surname given is Shepherd, rather than Sheppard (source: PRO ref. RG10 piece/folio 1641/104 page 4).  If our assumption is correct, he was married to Sarah, who was aged 25 years, and they had a daughter, Sarah, aged 8 months.

His surname also appears to have possibly been rendered as Shepherd when the 1881 Census was taken.  Assuming once again the entry to be for the correct person, he then lived at Great Parndon, Essex and worked as an agricultural labourer.  He gave his age as 39 years.  He lived there with his wife, Sarah, aged 35 years and their children: Sarah, aged 10 years; Henry, aged 8 years; Mary Jane, aged 5 years and Harriet Emily, aged 2 years (source: PRO ref. RG11 piece 1739 folio 26 page 3).

At the time of the 1901 Census, he lived at Clamps, Great Parndon, Essex.  His age is given as 59 years and he worked as a horseman on a farm.  He lived there with his wife, Sarah, aged 55 years and their children: Mary Jane aged 25 years, a cook; Harriet Emily, aged 22 years; Florence, aged 19 years, a parlour maid; Fanny, aged 11 years.  Also in the household was Annie, aged 12 years, described as Henry’s granddaughter, and William, aged 5 years, described as Henry’s grandson (source: RG13 piece 1642 folio 94 page 2).

He completed a census schedule to show that on the night of 2 April 1911 he was aged 69 years and worked as a horseman on a farm.  He had been born at Parndon, Essex.  He had been married to Sarah, aged 65 years, for an unspecified number of years and they had had 9 children, of whom 7 were still living.  Also living with them were their daughter,  Emily, aged 32 years, and their grandson, William BARDELL, aged 15 years, who worked as a garden boy.  They all lived at Clamps Cottage, Great Parndon, Essex (source: PRO ref. She married, on 3 August 1885, at the church of St John’s Dulwich, in the parish of Camberwell, Surrey; James ROWLING.  Both parties gave their address as 16, Nigel Road, Camberwell, Surrey.  Her brother, Frederick, and her cousin, Harriett PENNINGTON, were witnesses (source: certified copy of entry 315 in the register of marriages).

At the time of the 1891 Census, she lived at 17, Domville Grove, Camberwell, Surrey.  The entry gives her age as 29 years and her place of birth as Belvedere, Kent, but her husband’s given name as Thomas and the family name as RAWLINGS: his place of birth is given as Royston, Cambridgeshire, and his occupation as a carman.  With them were their children: Frederick, aged 4 years, born in Camden Town, Middlesex; Leonard, aged 3 years, born in Waterloo, Lambeth, Surrey; and Myra, aged 2 years, also born in Waterloo, Lambeth, Surrey (source: PRO ref. RG12 piece 485 folio 33 page 14).

At the time of the 1901, she lived at 62, Beatrice House, Blaydon Row, Camberwell, Surrey, with her husband, James, and their children: Frederick James, aged 14 years, a builder’s labourer; Leonard George, aged 13 years, also a builder’s labourer; Myra Elizabeth, aged 12 years; John William, aged 9 years, who had been born in Camberwell, Surrey; Herbert Gilbert, aged 6 years, who had been born at Newington, Surrey; Henry, aged 4 years, who had been born at Newington, Surrey; and Edward Percival, aged 2 years, who had been born at Newington, Surrey (source: PRO ref.
