PLAYLE FAMILY HISTORY

Generation 1

Joseph PLAYLE (c. 1830 –?)

He worked as a printer at the time of Emma’s birth in 1872 and at the time of William’s birth in 1878.

At the time of the 1881 Census, his age is given as 50 years and he worked as a carpenter.  He lived at 125 Packington Road, Acton, Middlesex where he and his wife, Emma, lived with their children: Emma (aged 8, born in Acton) and William (aged 3, also born in Acton) (Source: PRO ref. RG11 piece 1355 folio 77 page 33).

He died before the 1891 Census was taken, and he had certainly died by December 1897 when his wife, Emma, died (this is stated on her death certificate).  We do not believe that his was the death that occurred on 10 November 1888 at Lowhall Farm Cottage, Walthamstow, Essex.

Generation 2

Emma PLAYLE (1872 -?)

She was born on 8 November 1872 at Stafford Road, Acton, Middlesex, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (source: certified copy of an entry of birth in the Acton sub-district of Brentford registration district).  She was baptised, on 26 January 1873 (source: entry 59 in the register of baptisms for All Saints church, South Acton, Middlesex, stating names of parents as Joseph and Emma PLAYLE and address as Strafford Road, and stating date of birth as 8 November 1872).

She married, on 10 May 1896, at St James’ church, Enfield Highway, Middlesex; William Alfred Palmer.  She gave her age as 23 years and her address as Alma Road, Ponders End.

At the time of the 1901 Census, her age was given as 27 years old and she lived at 50, Fanshawe Avenue, Barking, Essex.  She lived there with her husband, William, a paper hanger aged 26 years and their children:  Emma, aged 4 years and Albert, aged 2 years, who had both been born at Enfield, Middlesex and an unnamed, 14 day old daughter, who had been born in Barking (source: PRO ref. RG13 piece 1654 folio 89 page 52).

If you have any further information about Emma and William, please mail us.

William Alfred PALMER (c. 1874 -?)

At the time of his marriage to Emma, he worked as a paperhanger and lived at Alma Road, Ponders End.  His father was Thomas PALMER, a carpenter.

William John (1878 -1942)

He was born 8 February 1878 at Park Road, Acton, Middlesex, the son of Joseph and Emma.  He married, 7 July 1898 at St Andrews Church, Enfield, Middlesex; Florence Mary SHEPPARD.  At that time, he lived at 75 Percival Road, Enfield and worked as a paperhanger.  His age is wrongly shown as 21.  They had children: William John, Albert James and Florence Amelia Rose.

By the time of the 1901 Census, he had moved to 20 Corinthian Road, Erith, Kent and worked as a general labourer.  He lived there with Florence and their son, William, aged 2, who had been born in Erith.  They also lived there with Florence’s apparently widowed father, but whose name is recorded as James, rather than John.

He completed the Census schedule to show that on the night of 2 April 1911 he was aged 33 years and worked as a house painter.  He had been married to Florence Mary, aged 32 years, for 13 years, who had had two children, who were still living: William John, aged 12 years, and Albert James, aged 6 years.  The family lived at 51, Horsa Road, Belvedere, Kent, a dwelling consisting of six rooms (source: PRO ref. RG14PN3745 RG78PN142RD43SD2ED5SN96).

He worked as a foreman painter for a builder, Mr FINNEY, until outbreak of war in 1914 when, unfit for military service, he went to work at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich (his occupation there is not disclosed).  After the war, he carried out contract work as a foreman for another builder, a Mr F HARDING, until starting business for himself in 1924.  He was admitted to the County Hospital, Dartford, in August 1941 and died there on 4 January 1942.  He was buried at Brook Street cemetery, Erith on 9 January 1942.
