VI – Settlements in Moulton, 1795.
Only one certificate of settlement is in
existence for this year. It is
dated 13 December, 1794 allowed by His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace 24
January, 1795, and bears the name of Joseph and Sarah Horne, of Overstone.
The certificate recites as follows:-
“Northamptonshire
“WE, Samuel Pell the Elder and (to wit) William Houghton,
Churchwardens, and we Samuel Pell the younger and William Houghton, Overseers of
the Poor of the Parish of Overstone in the County of Northampton aforesaid; do
hereby own and acknowledge Joseph Horne and Sarah his Wife and their two
children Thomas and John to be Inhabitants legally settled in the Parish of
Overston aforesaid. In Witness
whereof, we have hereunto set our Hands and Seals this thirteenth Day of
December in the 35th year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George
the Third by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King;
Defender of the Faith, &c., and in the Year 1794.

But this is not all
for the document proceeds –
“To the
Church-Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Moulton in the County
of Northampton, or to any, or either of them.
“WE whose names are hereto subscribed, two of His Majesty’s Justices
of the Peace for the County of Northampton aforesaid, do allow of the above
written Certificate. And we do also
certify, that John White, one of the witnesses who attested the execution of the
said Certificate, hath made Oath before us, that he did see the Church Wardens
and Overseers whose Names and Seals are to the said Certificate subscribed and
set severally sign and seal the said Certificate, and that the Names of Simon
Reddish and the said John White whose names are above subscribed, as Witnesses
to the Execution of the said Certificate, are of their own proper Hand-writing.
Dated the 24th Day of January in the Year 1795.
