Informations of Witnesses severally taken upon Oath, and acknowledged on behalf of our Sovereign Lady the Queen, touching the Death of Thomas Duffin at the General Infirmary Prospect Street in the Parish of Holy Trinity in the Town or Borough of Kingston upon Hull, in the County of the same Town or Borough, on the Third day of February in the thirty sixth Year of the Reign of our said Sovereign Lady the Queen, and in the year of our Lord One Thousand, Eight Hundred and seventy three before John Joseph Thorney, Esquire, Her said Majesty's Coroner for the said Town or Borough and County, on view of the body of the said Thomas Duffin then and there lying dead, as follows:- To Wit,
William Duffin of Nafferton in the county of York labourer on his oath saith:
The body shown to the Jury in the deadhouse is that of my brother Thomas Duffin. He was 15 years old. He would have been 16 on 28th inst. He was tall for his age. He came here about last harvest. I saw him about 6 weeks since. He said nothing about his work.
George Davison of 7 Regent terrace, Regent street in the Borough aforesaid Shunter on his oath saith:
Duffin and I were both shunters in the North Eastern Railway Companys goods station at Hull. I have been about 13 months.
I was with him on Friday when he was killed. We were shunting waggons with a pilot engine. There were two empty vans tied to the engine we wanted to put them on another siding. As we were on the engine I asked him if he would mind the points or loose the waggons off the engine. He said he would loose the waggons. I went to the points. I ran on ahead a little way to get to them. The engine and waggons came ---- me not so fast as I could walk. I did not see him with them. I saw the waggons go on to the line they were intended for but not far enough to let the engine pass them. I called to him to help me to give them a shove. He said Johnny theyve run over me. I ran to him. I could not see him from where I was as he had left his lamp on the engine. I found him between the rails on which the vans had passed. Both legs were hurt. I asked him what he was doing and he said he fell off the engine. He would sit on the buffer plank of the engine to uncouple the waggons. We were "slipping" the waggons. The engine was standing about ten yards from the points. Some men came up and we put him on the engine and took him to the yard and then carried him here on a stretcher.
It was about three a.m. when he was hurt. It was a fine night, but very cold. I have seen loose waggons from the engine before. He was very careful and active. He was quite sober. He told me a few weeks ago that he was between 16 and 17. He looked as old as that. We had been at work from 5.30 pm. We should be relieved at 7am.
Baker Wainwright of 2 Williams peacebogan street in the Borough aforesaid locomotive engine driver on his oath saith:
On Friday morning I was driving a tank pilot engine. I went on at 5 pm the night before. Davison was directing me. He directed me to slip two waggons. He held the points. Davison asked deceased whether he would loose the waggons or hold the points. Deceased preferred to loose the waggons and went to the front of the engine to which the waggons were attached. We were going slow first.
It was about 3 a.m. and very dark. He took his lamp with him to the front of the engine which hid him from me. I went slowly on, he called out all right, and then I went a very little quicker so as to clear the points. I went perhaps 30 yards and stopped. I intended to return over the same points. I saw Davison run carrying his lamp. I heard no cry. I thought something was wrong and got off my engine and went up to Davison's light and found Duffin lying in the four foot. The waggons had gone past him. He was crushed about his knee. He asked for a drink. I found his lamp on the fore buffer plank. We got him on the engine and took him into the yard and from there he was taken away. I think the engine jerked a little and he lost his hold and fell off. It did not jerk more than usual. It was very cold. There was no particular ---- of work when he was hurt. I have been a driver four months and a foreman 4.5 years. The men constantly get on the plank to loose the waggons.
Joseph William Stanton of the Infirmary aforesaid House Surgeon on his oath saith:
Deceased was brought here at half past 3 on Friday morning. He had a large lacerated wound of the left thigh and the bone of that foot was also crushed. The right leg was much bruised. He was suffering from the shock, and died from the same cause about 7 am the same day.

A NAFFERTON LAD AT THE FRONT
2257 Driver A. Duffin, 83rd Battery, Royal Field Force, writing to his parents at Nafferton, from Armilow, under date of December 29th, says: -
We have been on the trek with a convoy. We left Middleburg a week ago to march here with a big convoy to join the 83rd Battery. We were on the march on Christmas Day. The country is in a terrible state; all the houses are burnt down. On Christmas morning we marches about eleven miles. We camped about eleven oclock for the day; we killed three cows the day before, so we had plenty of fresh meat, and plenty of biscuits. When we got to Armilow we had our proper Christmas dinner. They can say what they like, but Tommy is thought about at Christmas time, even on the veldt. We had one of John Hill and Sons puddings; they were splendid; also a quarter of a pound of tobacco and two pints of beer each; we are only allowed one pint a day. Money is no good here; I have not seen any since I landed, and dont want any. I think we are marching out tomorrow after Botha. I have not been under fire yet, although the Boers attacked our rear guard two nights before Christmas. We are in the Northern Transvaal.

Military Service: Active Duty, 3 June 1915.172
Under date, June 3rd, Pte W.E. Duffin, 5th A.P.W.O. (Yorkshire) regt., in a letter to his parents at Park House, Nafferton, after thanking them for a parcel, says - "We are at present out of the trenches ad resting and it goes up very nice. I think there are all sorts of soldiers up here. I was among some Indians the other day; they are very nice fellows. I am sending you photo; it is our late Captain; he was killed two days after his promotion. I am very sorry, as he was a right man. The Germans have not been on us with their gas lately, but when they do they don't do much at us now we have got some respirators; they cover all our faces up. One morning they used gas and it only affected my eyes."
Pte Duffinin another letter, dated June 4th says - "We are at present in a field resting. We were called out one night to go in reserve, and we went in some dug-outs. We were not in long before the devils started shelling us out, about 12 o'clock. We were all in dug-outs when a shell came and burst in the next dug-out to ours. It killed four, I am sorry to say. They were Lance Corporal Addison (from Sledmere), Lance Corporal Jackson (Scarbro'), Pte H. Berriman, and Lance Corporal Hopper (Driffield). I and Pte Whitfield (Sledmere), were buried, but I am pleased to say we escaped unwounded. You can dodge the bullets, but when the shells are fair on you there is no dodging them. We sometimes just get ourselves dug in then a "Jack Johnson" comes and plays hell up with us. The other morning our lot started shelling the devils for about four hours; I daresay it was the heaviest bombardment since the war started. It was the same morning the Germans used gas. Well they gassed a few of our men but they got some shells in return; our lot blew them clean out of their trenches. I think the Territorials gave done their share. They have got a splendid name given them by the regulars: they call us the Yorkshire Ghurkas. I would not care how soon the war was over, as I am longing to see dear old England once more. If I do not live to get back, I shall be able to say I did my bit."
Mr Duffin has other two sons with the army service corps.

General Notes: y in laws live at Parkside, 45 Station Rd., Nafferton. They owned the small house next door, which adjoined theirs. It came as part of the smallholding when they bought it. They leff it in its original condition, not having the cash to do anything with it. At that time, they had a son who had muscular dystrophy, so all their cash went into converting their own home for his wheelchair etc.
The house next door became occupied by the Duffin's (father and son - Roy and Guy), who simply lived there as squatters, but with the owner's permission. They didn't use the house for anything, so didn't mind them being there. The house didn't have any electricity, running water or any modern amenities. The mother in law (now dead) took them pies etc round on baking days. I accompanied her once to deliver them and they invited us in. It was dark, even in daytime, and had a large, open fire, unlit. Can't remember the time of year or if it was cold. The floor was more like a barn, with soil and hay (or straw), and there were candles around the room. It smelt damp and even now I don't know how on earth they managed in it.
The mother in law offered to have the house updated but would have to charge rent if they did this, as it would mean a loan. They turned the offer down, though.
they eventually moved out into council property and the house was then sold on its vacancy.
My husband tells me that one of the Duffins, or perhaps both, worked at the building company in Nafferton called Rudds, which no longer exists. Haven't heard anything of the Duffins since then and I really don't know where they went to.
I recall that it was around the time that I was pregnant with my first child, which would be 1983.
I also remember that when they were trying to get a council property, the Driffield Times came to the house and slated the mother in law for having a property in that condition. The Duffins and the mother in law complained that they weren't being fair, given that the occupants were 'squatters' and they simply wanted to be given another home with modern amenities (council properties being very cheap at the time and would have been less than private renting). The newspaper carried an apology shortly afterwards. She was particularly offended because they really wanted to sell the house to pay for the alterations to their own home for their son, who died before the Duffins moved out, but didn't want them to be homeless. In defence of the Duffins, she never actually told them this.
