Market gardener, clerk, carter. He was the son of Francis & Ann Allerston (born Woodcock). His father was a ships carpenter, and in the naval dockyards at Chatham and Sheerness had worked on the construction of men of war later under Nelson's command. Allerston senior retired to Bridlington Quay where he became the inn keeper of the Cock and Lion.
William at the age of 8 was sent to school in London. He later returned to Bridlington, and with a brother, went into business as a linen draper. They lost their savings in a railway share speculation and William decided to emigrate. He and his family arrived in Natal on the Henry Tanner. They were delayed three weeks in Durban while the luggage was being off-loaded. During this time the Government housed the emigrants in the still uncompleted Customs House at the Point.
After a few weeks in Pietermaritzburg, the Allerstons moved onto Ladysmith where William had obtained the post of constable. Ladysmith then consisted of only four wattle and daub houses, and the representatives of law and order for the whole of Klip River Division comprised the magistrate, James Melville, Allerston the constable, and about 25 Natal Native Police.
Conditions were hard and Allerston's health began to suffer, so after about seven months the family returned to Pietermaritzburg. Here Allerston took on any work he could get until he was able to afford to buy land and build a house. Then he started a market garden. By at least June 1851 this was what he was doing. The last reference found to him as a gardener dates to July 1856.
As a Byrne emigrant he was entitled to 65 acres at Slang Spruit. By April 1851 he had taken title to this allotment, but did not settle on it. He remained in Pietermaritzburg where by the end of 1852 he was the owner and occupier of erf 15 Greyling Street. By Aug. 1858 he was living in Church Street, possibly on erf 11, which was his address two years later. He was working as a store-keeper by mid 1860. By 1867, he was employed as a clerk, address, erf 22 Boom Street. By the end of 1870 he was living at 20 Boom Street, and still working as a clerk.
In about 1871 Allerston and his sons, his daughter, Rosina, and her husband, George Denby, went to try their luck at the diamond fields and stayed in Kimberley about two years. After his return to Pietermaritzburg, Allerston went into business as a carter, again at 20 Boom Street in which occupation he remained until at least the early 1880s. However, when his wife died in 1884, he was described in the Pietermaritzburg death register as a clerk.
In 1834, Allerston had married Mary Ann Cranswick (c. 1813- Jan 1884, Pietermaritzburg, Natal) daughter of John Cranswick (died 1862), an ironmonger of Bridlington.

Allerston, Alfred (born c. 1828) and William Francis (born c. 1830)

These two young men were from Bridlington, Yorkshire. They were probably related to William Allerston, also a Bridlington man. Both came on the Haidee. Their occupations as given on their emigration certificates were ' gardener ' and ' grazier ' respectively.

Both were landowners in Pietermaritzburg Division by Aug. 1852, and were on the 1852-53 jury list. F.W. (sic) was entered as a gentleman and an owner and occupier of his property. All the information given of Alfred was that he was a landowner.

One of them may have been the Mr. Allerston who sailed for Cape Town in Aug. 1853. He travelled steerage on the Sir Robert Peel.
