Martin’s Haven June 16th 2001
Louise and I met up at my place of work and took my car from there. When we arrived at the car park we could not take out gear to the beach because they were pumping fuel for the Skomer ferry. So we had a wait for about 20 minutes or so.
Lots of divers on the beach, most of whom belonged to Bristol University BSAC. One of their guys provided some entertainment for the day when he forgot to zip up his dry suit….
So much for buddy checks!!!
Our first dive started with a short surface swim to get beyond the Skomer ferry. We then followed the West cliff face which goes down to about 15 metres then drop off to 20 metres. Lots of big crabs and Dead Men’s Fingers all along this route. For the return leg I was conscious of avoiding the ferry and crossed to the other side of the bay. Well almost, truth is I didn’t check my compass and wandered to the far side of the bay accidentally.
Second dive was just coming up to high tide. We went out along the East cliff face through some gullies with strong surges. Went around the headland but current was quite strong and as we were close to the turn point we decided to retrace our route. We found that this meant that we would have to swim into a strong current and to avoid this we drifted across to the West side of the bay.
Managed to reduce the weight on my belt today by a further 1.8 Kg
Now need to do the same in fresh water and draw up a new table.
