St Davids

August 25th & 26th 2001

This trip had been “planned” for some time and Dave and I were accompanied by Marie and Bev for the weekend. Dave and Marie were at the camp site, which turned out to be less than ideal, while Bev and I stayed at a B&B.

The first dive was on the Saturday and was a RIB dive, booked with West Wales Divers, out of Martin’s Haven. I had only booked the dive the previous week and was expecting a wreck dive. However when we got there we were told that we were diving at a place called High Point. We found out that this was about half a mile outside the bay.

We dropped into 18 metres with the viz at about 3 metres. We saw some bib, boring sponges, anemones, fan worms. However it was rather disappointing as this type of dive could have been done from the shore, and we could have saved £15. To cap it all my reel jammed when I sent up the SMB and I had to release it. Fortunately the skipper found it for me.

After packing the kit away we looked along the coast for other dive sites but didn’t get in again so the day was somewhat wasted.

On the Sunday I met Dave at the lifeboat station at St Justinian’s. We had to carry the gear a hell of a long way down to the water, so I was really not looking forward to the return leg of the trek. We went in to the left of the slipway and headed over to the rocks. There is a lot of kelp here and despite the viz being about 5 metres there was not a lot to see. Had a fairly high SAC on this dice, I cant explain why as it seemed very relaxing.

After climbing up to the top again we headed back to the camp site and were planning to dive in the harbour at Porth Clais. This would have meant another long climb down to the bottom with the kit so we decided to call it a day and go home.

Not a very well planned, or enjoyable weekend, and I don’t think I will be hurrying back to St Davids for some considerable time. There are many better places to go, with more accessible dive sites.
