Middleton, situated about seven miles from the city of Manchester, is the second largest settlement in the borough of Rochdale and has about 25 per cent of its total population. Some of Middleton's most famous sons include Edgar Wood, the innovative architect; Sam Bamford, the 19th century radical writer, Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes, comedians Bernard Manning and Steve Coogan.
