The father of Ellen, my maternal grandmother was was Henry Beard, born in Northampton, c 1840. He was a tailor and married Elizabeth (Betsy)Williams .
There were eight children of the family,
Anne (Annie) (Date unknown)
Caroline (Carrie) 1860
Elizabeth 1862
Ellen 1864 1926 .. (my grandmother)
Henry William 1866
Albert 1870
Harry 1870
Alfred 1874
Anne & William emigrated with their families to Australia c 1910 and I believe, some of the family later returned to the UK.
Ellen married twice, firstly to William Vawer and secondly, in 1904, as a widow, to Thomas Dyoss (b 1866).
Albert married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Shaw, his cousin, and had one child, a daughter, Gertrude, who married a Jack Broomhall. They had a son Lawrence (or Laurence). Gertude (Gertie) was hit and killed in a motor accident on Walsall Broadway.
There is a family story of Henry Beard having had a parrot. It goes that one day, on returning to his workroom, found a visitor there and was greeted by the parrot squawking "He's got your scissors, gaffer", which, indeed, the visitor had. I know that although intelligent, parrots aren't that good with language, but I have no doubt that the story is based on an actual event. Perhaps one of you visitors to this page may recognise the story in their part of the family.
