Dyoss

Currently the record begins with a Thomas Dyoss, born April 25th 1817, who married Elizabeth ?, born c1821 in Smethwick. Among their children was Thomas, born November 6th 1840. This Thomas married Elizabeth Hales, and the family worked on the Shropshire and Staffordshire canals. They had a son ,also Thomas, born January 17th 1866 at Acton Trussell Wharf, on the canal near Stafford, and several other children, only one of whom, William, lived beyond childhood.

Thomas Dyoss, born 1866 was my maternal grandfather; he spent his youth on the canal, but in late teens 'came ashore' working with horses for a family at Platts Bridge, on the Bloxwich Road, Walsall. He later joined the LNWR railway as a navvy, eventually being in charge of a 'gang'. The wedding certificate for his marriage to widow Ellen Vawer (nee Beard) shows him to have been a carpenter at that time, and a widower. He first married in 4q 1888 Hannah (Annie) Stringer and had a daughter Edith Mary in1889. . In the 1891 census he is shown as married, but his wife died in 1889, presumably in childbirth. Edith is in the 1901 census in at a catholic "Laundry" attached to the Convent of the Good Shepherd", aged 12 and apparently "assisting in the garden". She seems to have returned to Walsall, possibly to live with her father & Ellen but she died aged 18 in1908. My mother Nellie Dorothy Dyoss was the only child of the second marriage, born 31 January 1905. She died 30 May 2000.

I believe there may be an Irish connection with the Dyoss family. Thomas (born 1866) certainly spent some time in Bray, near Dublin in about 1885, and as a child, I remember an annual 'punnett' of Shamrock arriving, presumably at St. Patricks day time. I also remember a Harry? Nightingale who I believe lived in Dublin, but what the connection was I do not know..

I have a small document, reproduced below, believed written by Thomas (b 1866) giving dates of births and deaths in his family, and on which some of the above is based.:

I have more info in a gedcom file with other branches of the family included, should anyone care to ask for it.
