Halvard Solness is a man at the top of his profession. And yet he is a troubled man. Haunted by guilt and his fear of the younger generation, he seeks salvation through his relationship with a beautiful young girl, Hilde Wangel. Declared by Sigmund Freud to be his favourite play, The Master Builder is a complex psychological masterpiece, which works on several different levels. It is considered to be the most 'personal and revealing' of Ibsen's plays. Ibsen is widely considered to stand second only to Shakespeare as the World's greatest playwright. During his lifetime, he continually challenged the accepted boundaries and his plays are as relevant today as they were when they were written. His other plays include Peer Gynt, A Doll's House and Ghosts. Dales based Craven Image Theatre was formed in 1999 to produce challenging and innovative theatre, focusing on new writing. The company's first two productions, Obsession (After Penny and Strange Desire) and All About Anne, were given a total of 41 performances in six different theatres spread across the UK. |
