Big FinishApparently, it's named after an episode of Steven Moffatt's Press Gang. are a company set up by Jason Haigh-ElleryI've never met Jason, nor spoken to him. Just seen his signature on contracts. and Gary RussellI've met Gary Russell. And one day I'll have the nerve to apologise to him., primary to create and sell licensed audio-plays on CD. They started by making audio adaptations of Virgin's New Adventure novels, only they didn't have the rights to use the Doctor or the TARDIS, so they made companion Bernice SummerfieldOh Benny - a thousand fan-boys of a certain age love her. the main character instead. That went well, so they decided to publish books starring Bernice as well. The range has been through a few changes, but it now seems to have settled down into a couple of books a year interspaced throughout the year.

Image of a collection of Big Finish Short TripsThe success of Benny's range led Big Finish to start negotiating with the BBC about producing official Doctor Who audios as well. The range was a remarkable success, still going strong and over-shadowing everything else they produce - of which there is quite a lot. It was so successful that when the BBC decided that the Short Trips books were too expensive to keep publishing, Big Finish decided that they'd take over and prove them wrong.

Big Finish devolve the production of their books to individual editors: the editor gets a budget, and uses it to hire whoever he likes to write stories to fill the book. Fortunately, on more than one occasion, the editor in question asked me to be one of those people.
