I
first started trying to write a play when I was thirteen. When I was in
junior school, Mr Wilcox and Mr Littledyke had taken our class for a
Wednesday afternoon drama lesson, and my love affair with theatre began.
By the time I was cautiously writing scripts, I'd moved to Soar Valley
College and twice weekly drama lessons with Jez Simons. Jez also ran
Haithi Productions with Jyoti Patel, a local youth theatre that I was
briefly in with Parminder
NagraMy
friend fancied her, but I wasn't that interested. Just so you know.. At the same time, he helped me a great deal with my
writing.
The
first play I finished was called Hello? and won a competition. It
also brought me into contact with Tim
CrookI
had an interview at Goldsmiths because Tim worked there. It didn't go well.. He took me under his wing and introduced me properly to
the theatre and writing and swearing, and also produced the second play
that I'd ever written. Then I went away to University, and - because of Mr
Wilcox, Mr Littledyke, Mr Simons and Mr Crook - I studied drama.
Manchester
University introduced me to many things, but it also introduced me to
Chris Sudworth who in turn introduced me to the Edinburgh
Festival FringeThe
only real way to learn about the Fringe is to go there. But this is a close second.. My last plays were performed at the Edinburgh
Fringe, and even after Doctor Who lured me away from the stage I
still do my best to get up there as often as I can. Just to say hello. I
still get ideas for plays popping into my head every so often: so far,
I've always put them to one side until I finish that next novel. But one
day, hopefully, I'll start writing in stage directions again, just for old
time's sake.
The links at the bottom of the page will take you to each play's pages, where you will be able to read a sample and reviews, and find out about the play's cast and crew. Enjoy.
