It is useful to have a clear idea of the outcomes anticipated when engaging in youth work. We have therefore drafted 5 areas that help describe a disciple of Jesus Christ.

We believe that a disciple should be one who:

  • Participates in His Body Wholeheartedly

  • Reflects His Character and Priorities Consistently

  • Enters His Presence Regularly

  • Seeks a knowledge and understanding of the Scripture humbly

  • Shares the Good News Regularly
How does it happen?

The discipleship process has 4 main programmes which are designed to help everyone involved take the next step of growth. These are modular based courses with a specific curriculum that focuses on developing the spiritual disciplines. As we develop these disciplines we expect to see people change from the inside, leading to a distinctive lifestyle which reaches out to others both in word and action. Each team has a weekend residential, preferably early in the life of the team, and generally the discipleship process concludes with a residential summer service project.

The discipleship process revolves around 4 core components and it is important that there is a healthy balance between these areas. Each team is different and it will require wisdom and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit on the part of the team leader to find balance between the 4 areas given the time restraints. Below is an outline of the 4 core components and the main elements of each:

Community

Building quality relationships through defrosters, teambuilding exercises, trust activities, etc.
Consistent contacting.

Scripture

Sharing from personal devotions.
Use of study cassettes.
"Soapbox".
Memorisation of Scripture.

Prayer

Passion for prayer within the group.
Establishing a prayer base outside the group.

Service

Ministry in the local community.
Summer service project.

These 4 core components provide the framework for the development of the 4 small-group discipleship programmes, which have their own unique curriculum.

Summer Service Projects

In 1997 the first Exodus Summer Service Team, of 22 young people, travelled to Romania to bring hope to children. Since then over 50 teams, involving over 750 young people have travelled all over the globe on a mission of “..faith, hope and love...”. Often these teams have gone to places where poverty and deprivation are common place. It is a challenge to “share the street” with children for whom it is their home, bring food to hungry refugees , build an extension to a home in Romania where 18 children at serious risk could find shelter, or sharing Christ through music in weird and wonderful places. Teams have reached out to those with aids, the homeless and the sick from Asia to South America and from North America to Africa.

Taking part in a Summer Service Project will bring you challenges which potentially will change you forever. Giving you a new perspective, opening new doors and new horizons for life. Most crucially it will give you the opportunity to bring hope to others you never imagined you would encounter.

Watch this space for details of next year's programme.
