On entering the hall on this chilly April evening, we saw the new Lowrey "Sensation" with more lights than the Blackpool Illuminations, as we welcomed Tom Horton for the first time to the Basildon Keyboard Club.
He started with the well known and very lively Tico Tico, and then showed us what lovely sounds are in the organ with I Apologize & Moonlight Becomes You. A complete change to theatre organ sounds followed next with a medley of songs starting with The Best of Times, Tulips From Amsterdam & Think Of Me Wherever You Are.
Tom followed this with his own style of playing and sounds with the beautiful ballad Only Love. Once again we had a change of pace & style taking us back to the Forties and Big Band sounds Falling In Love - Every Time We Say Goodbye - It Might As Well Be Spring & Bewitched.
Oh for those heavenly sounds of the harp & Celeste with Forgotten Dreams. Well they say the old ones are the best and this is certainly true as Tom next played a selection of Ivor Novello songs Waltz of My Heart - I will Give You the Starlight - We'll Gather Lilacs in the Spring. Before we knew it time had caught up with us with Tom ending the first half with a great number from the film A Bridge Too Far.
Well fed and watered, we settled down to a great second half, commencing with what Tom called his fun medley a jazzy number It Don't mean a Thing, Rock Around The Clock, Dust Yourself Down, Alexander's Ragtime Band, a slower style then followed with It's Magic and to finish Farandole.
It's not often we hear the harp played but a lovely version of You With The Stars In Your Eyes followed and then a complete contrast of sounds altogether with a fantastic version of War of the Worlds.
Next we were whisked off on holiday to Hawaii with a selection of songs on the Hawaiian Guitar, before continuing with a Latin American Number The Shadow of Your Smile.
A complete change followed giving us total peace and calm of the cathedral sound with In A Monastery Garden. However, we were soon brought back to the real world with fast toe tapping songs made well known by none other than Russ Conway Rubeck and Saturday Rag.
Alas, time had caught up with us again. But we were not going to let Tom go without the traditional BKC encore we expect. Hence the night ended with a great Frank Sinatra Number My Way. I don't think it will be too long before we see Tom Horton doing it his way once again. A great night of music accompanied by Keith's great lighting effects.
