Tim Flint

December 5th 2009

With the stage looking nice and festive, Tim 'Flinty' Flint appeared at the Roland AT90C resplendent in sparkling violet jacket and star spangled trousers! Tim last played for us in March 2007 and loves to interact with his audience. Opening with 'Cheek to Cheek' a George Shearing classic played to a big-band sound we were off to a good start. Next followed 'I Remember You' made popular in 1962 by Frank Ifield, with Keith providing a lovely 'electric-blue' backdrop.

'Seen me before'? Tim asks the audience. So what kind of music do you like? How about a cinema organ style then? So, using a cinema organ registration we heard 'The Typewriter' popularised by Leroy Anderson. The theme tune from the film 'Friendly Persuasion' a 1956 classic came next followed by 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square' played to a lovely Compton organ sound. From the film 'Meet Me In St Louis' we heard the 'Trolley Song' followed by 'Tiger Rag', a jazz standard first recorded in 1917.

Tim likes his vintage stuff alright. From an opera based on a short story by Giovanni Verga and played with beautiful strings, harp and flute we heard 'Cavalleriana Rusticana'. Changing the mood Tim played a favourite of his, the lively 'Organ Hoedown' by Harold Smart. From the 1982 TV series 'We'll Meet Again', he played 'The Song That I Sing' to a slow Foxtrot with big-band registration.

Following the positive response to our camera/projector set-up, we have now made further improvements to the system by adding another screen and using a picture-in-picture display incorporating camera-fade technology; high tec', you bet!

The theme tune from the 1985 film 'Out of Africa' was up next played with strings, piano and haunting flute. A medley from 'Mack and Mabel' followed, with a combination of xylophone, whistle, trombone and honky-tonk piano sounds to a whirl of coloured lights, leading us nicely to the close of the first half of the evening.

After feasting on sausage rolls, mince-pies, choc Swiss-roll, tea and coffee we were treated to a visit from Santa, (who looked remarkably like Keith) who kindly drew the raffle for us!

With Tim returning on stage dressed to upstage the Xmas tree, we heard the theme tune from the 'Avengers' TV series played to orchestral sounds and strings, then Hoagy Carmichael's lovely 'The Nearness Of You' with breathy sax and piano.

"It's Only A Couple Of weeks To Christmas", say's Tim, so, to a medley of Christmas songs including 'Jingle Bells, Winter Wonderland, Hark the Herald Angels, Away in a Manger, Silent Night' we sang along to a star filled sky followed by a lovely deep red backlit stage. To follow, Tim played a lively march with full brass band; stirring stuff.

A beautiful guitar solo then relaxed us before we were treated to the 'Muskrat Ramble' an old Kenny Ball chestnut. With the evening rapidly drawing to an end Tim's encore was 'For Once In My Life' a Stevie Wonder classic using theatre organ with a backing singer doo-da sound
