The South Devon Diesel Traction group's blue Class 20, 20110 arrived at the Spa VR on 17th June and should remain on the line for the remainder of the summer.
Amazingly, it was back in 2006 when SDDT sister loco 20118 spent the summer in Tunbridge Wells. 3 years ago....how time doth fly.

Details of the Summer Diesel Gala involving 20110 with the home fleet will appear on our Gala webpage, in due course.

Photos : Upper, 20110 is pictured in the company of DRS 209xx versions of the class during the highly successful Eastleigh Works centenary event, 25th May 2009 (B.Thomas). Lower, the Type 1 at Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells-bound on 17th June aboard a Heanor low-loader (C.Nye).

  • 33063 - successfully completed a share in the 'Stag & Syphon' charter of Mon.13th July, top'n tailing (and some diuble-heading) with 37254 for a day of Sulzer and E.E. thrash on the Spa Valley Rly..

In late June, No.2 end bogie lift was completed, the loco stretching her legs for the first time in 4 or 5 months on test runs to Groombridge, on 1st July. Things went quite well, so 63 was given the task of moving the T-stock from TWW to Groombridge, shunt the sidings there, before returning to TWW with the 'Thumper' unit, in readyness for the Diesel Gala in August. The Youtube video clips shown above have been very kindly filmed and uploaded by one of our members. Click on the images to have them play in a new browser window.

  • Summer diesel gala : scheduled for Fri.7th - Sun.9th Aug., our Diesel Gala page will carry details of this nearer the date. Past events are recored there also. As eluded to above, 20110 is at the railway, having arrived on 17th June to spend the summer on the line. 'Thumper' unit 1317 is due to make a return to action after much renovation work, although not yet fully completed (as you will see from one of the video clips, above). The autumn diesel gala will be earlier in the calendar compared to previous seasons, brought forward to 19/20th Sept..
  • 33065 is now stood down, pending commencement of a 5-year restoration programme. The battery charge is kept up for occasional start-ups and possible use in emergencies.
  • Driver Experience Days : due to limited loco availability, these have not yet resumed but we're happy to receive enquiries and discuss possible options and requirements later in 2009. See our Driver Experience page for more details of what can be accomplished and how to get in touch.
  • WEBSITE WEB-HOST change : the website is being migrated from the current webhost to that of HOSTSE. During this process, some inter-page links and various photos may not work/appear correctly until the migration is completed. This will take a little time. Pleae bare with us!

    Welcome to the S.E.L.G. website

Our webpages aim to inform SELG members and the wider 'Crompton' world of our operations, developments and news on aspects of the South East locomotive Group.

There is a wealth of information, built up over a number of years, contained within the menus on the left of the screen (recent, clickable, Updates to the site are in the bottom left corner). Note that in most menus, older files tend to be at the bottom of listings, whilst recent items tend to be towards the top.

For the uninitiated, the pages of this site chart the recent history of the Group including:-

    • Transporting the two 'Cromptons' to the East Kent Railway & their subsequent return to working order.
    • Past Special Events like Galas and 'Crompton' weekends.
    • Our Cromptons at the Spa Valley Rly. (from 2003)
    • 33063 named "R.J.Mitchell", Sept. 2005.
    • Driver Experience days for the discerning enthusiast.
    • News and updates on other Crompton activity in the U.K.
    • '427', an 0-6-0 diesel-hydraulic shunting loco, relingquished from SELG ownership in Jan.2004.
    • Occasional articles on Crompton-related subjects like railtours (past and present) and Class 33's in years gone by.
The SELG operates three levels of membership; Full Owner members, Part Owners and Supporters. See the MEMBERSHIP MATTERS section under the MORE SELG ITEMS option, for details.
