No. 25, WINTER 1990

'The Sulzer Rose' Saturday 29th September 1990

The continuing saga of 33207

Hereford, Pembroke Dock, Carlisle, Penzance, Holyhead…… All places graced with the appearance of 33207 during the last five years. On Saturday 29th September Sheffield became the latest place 'off the beaten tracks to witness this well - travelled 'Slim Jim'. Organised by the BRC&W Type Three Preservation Group, 'The Sulzer Rose' would take two Construction 33's from Eastleigh to Sheffield as part of the Tinsley Open Day celebrations, At 0815, the tour departed with 33042 and 33207 at the head of TC . The combination of high fares, rain and the day being the last Saturday of the Summer timetable resulted in a number of empty seats. Picking up at Winchester, Basingstoke and Woking, the tour turned left and headed for Staines. Soon the Cromptons were 'off region' and reliving days past, up the Midland main line. Luton, Bedford, Kettering and Wellingborough were passed before the coalfields of Leicestershire came into view. A crew change at Leicester and the pair of Cromptons headed past Vic Berry's Yard, now the resting place of 33005, 044, 045, 062, 105, and 210 and up the Erewash Valley.

It was strange seeing the Cromptons winding past power stations and pits, overtaking and passing numerous Class 20's and 58's. North of Chesterfield, the tour took the Staveley line, passing a rundown Barrow Hill and the Departmental depot at Beighton before an on-time arrival at Sheffield Midland to be greeted by hundreds of photographers. Who said no one knew about 33's north of Birminghan!

The locomotives and the train were stabled in the centre road and then somewhat surprisingly shut down. They were supposed to run light engines to Tinsley, to go on display, but due to so many people wanting to go to the open day, the ridiculous hourly two-car DMU shuttle to the open day had to be increased, and the pilotman allocated to take the 33's up to the depot had to work the relief shuttle, so the 33's were therefore stranded.

He has a section for Cromptons - scroll down near the bottom of the home page.

Most of the train went off by rail or bus to visit a very wet open day; the 3 hours we were given was not adequate due to the problems actually getting to the site.. A quick sprint round revealed examples of most motive power past and present. Tense moments for many as the sheer volume of people meant a long wait for the shuttle back to the station and a tight connection for the return leg of the railtour. At 16.30 the 33's departed, witnessed again by hundreds of enthusiasts heading south to Derby then to Leicester and returning as outward. A successful day, and a further increasingly rare chance to travel with the 33's off region. Importantly, more money was raised both from the tour and the sales stands and preservation funds increased. As for 33207, Scotland surely must he next!

CLASS 33 Freight Up-date                     October 1990

The Winter timetable change has brought a restructuring of the Class 33 diagrams with some new duties and the loss of others. The six Class 60's planned for Channel Tunnel and Aggregate traffic (see Summer Review) have been sent to other regions and will now not arrive on the Southern until sometime in 1991. However with the arrival of the Class 59/1 for Whatley Quarry traffic and 60 diagrams on other regions many Class 56's have been displaced. Eight 56's have arrived on the Southern, working from Hither Green on some of the 33 construction sector diagrams. By mid-November, workings of Class 56's on these duties was somewhat erratic with 2 to 3 diagrams a day worked by Toton 56'S. The following trains are most frequently Class 56 hauled:

1)    7Y94     0940     Purley Aggregate sdgs - Cliffe     1515     TTHFO

     Then light engine to Theale

     6O60     1748     Theale - Northfleet     2115     SX

2)     7U40     0912     Angerstein Wharf - Battersea Yard     SX

     OR

7V78     0912     Angerstein Wharf - Park Royal     SX

7U41     1503     Battersea Yard - Angerstein Wharf     SX

     OR

7O78     1420     Park Royal - Angerstein Wharf     SX

3)     6C43     0800     Grain - Sevington     SX

     6C82     1359     Sevington - Grain     SX

     OR

     6C53     0441     Cliffe - Sevington     SX

     6C66     1059     Sevington - Cliffe     SX

These workings are partly covering for reduced FASB 33 availability and have allowed the transfer of FASB 33's (33009,019,027,047) to Departmental sector with more to follow. It has also provided capacity for a Construction sector locomotive to work a new diagram. This new diagram involves 18 trips between Chatham Dockyard and Hoo Junction, removing contaminated asbestos spoil from the Dockyard which is being cleared by property developers Shank and MacEwan for housing construction. By diagram, a Class 56 brings the train of empty spoil wagons from Forders sidings (Bedfordshire) to Hoo Junction; here the 33's splits the train into three and trips them one at a time to Chatham to collect the spoil. When the three sets are filled the Class 56 takes the load back to Bedfordshire. This procedure happens with 3 trains from Forders sidings during 24 hours. The 33 diagrams being as follows (Saturday times in brackets). The contract is likely to last l8 months to two years.

     6D83     0003     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     0045     MX

     6D74     0120     Chatham - Hoo Jcn     0204     MX

     6D85     0230(0133)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     0312(0215)     MSX

     6D82     0340(0245)     Chatham - Hoo Jcn     0424(0329)     SX

     6D87     0440(0302)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     0522(0344)     SX

     6D86     0547(0414)     Chatham Hoo Jcn     0633(0458)     SX

     6D89     0725(0627)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     0813(0714)     SX

     6D88     0845(0740)     Chatham Hoo Jcn     0930(0824)     SX

     6D91     0948(0843)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     1043(0928)     SX

     6D90     1115(0958)     Chatham - Hoo Jcn      1201(1052)     SX

     6D93     1230(1112)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     1313(1154)     SX

     6D92     1345(1223)     Chatham - Hoo Jcn     1432(1324)     SX

     6D95     1253(1343)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     1445(1428)     SX

     6D94     1515(1458)     Chatham - Hoo Jcn     1722(1552)     SX

     6D97     2000(1612)     Hoo Jcn - Chatham     2043(1654)     SX

     6D96     2120(1723)     Chatham - Hoo Jcn     2208(1824)     SX

     6D99     2230      Hoo Jcn - Chatham     2318     SX

Class 56 duty

     6O75     0220     Forders Sdgs - Hoo Jcn     0606     M-S

6M66     0630     Hoo Jcn - Forders Sdgs         SO

6M66     1204     Hoo Jcn - Forders Sdgs     SX

     6O77     0808     Forders Sdgs - Hoo Jcn     1243     SX

6M67     2001     Hoo Jcn - Forders Sdgs          SX

     6088     2005     Forders Sdgs - Hoo Jcn     2310     SX

These trains run up to Gillingham(Kent) and then run round continuing to Hoo Jcn/Chatham. Although booked for a single FASB 33, Departmental 33's have been noted and recently the Class 56 which brings the train down from Forders sidings has done all the trip work.

Also on the freight front, two diagrams booked to run as required involve 33's from the FASB sector:

     6Z00     1243     Grain - Sevington     1606     SX

     6Z00     1916     Sevington - Grain     2249     SX

This is booked for two x 33's.

6Z84 1152 Shakespeare Cliff - Grain 1413 SX

This is booked for a single 33.

ALL Saturday and Sunday only Grain - Shakespeare Cliff workings are now reduced to run as required.

It is also possible that in the coming months two displaced Class 56's will be based at Brighton to in turn displace the Class 73 on the Lavant - Drayton and the FASB 33 on the Tolworth/Crawley - Newhaven Aggregates.

On the Departmental front, one development with the Summer timetable was the RCE Civil Link duty taking a 33 from Ashford/Tonbridge to Leyton (ER). From October this now runs to Willesden on the LMR as follows:

    7M07     0957     Tonbridge - Willesden Brent     SX

     OR

     7M06     0905     Ashford - Willesden Brent     SX

     THEN

     7O81     1332     Willesden Brent - Tonbridge/Ashford     Arr. 1540     SX

A further working which runs as required involves a locomotive from the DMSA pool (33101,109, 116) & runs from Horsham to Taunton to collect cable troughs as follows:

     7Z20     1110     Horsham - Taunton     1633     SX

7Z21     1800     Taunton - Chichester (or Ashford or Horsham)     2240     SX

This runs via Salisbury and runs round at Westbury before continuing down the West Country main line to Taunton.

Also, it's worth noting that the Westbury shunting pool (DCWA) 33111,113, 117 can still be seen performing a wide variety of duties in the area; this is due to end early in 1991.

Finally, back in Kent, the Thursdays only VSOE, shunting by a Dover 33/2, from Folkestone to Folkestone Harbour has been discontinued for the winter months. Restarts on the 3rd Thursday of February 1991.

'Crompton Christmas'

Winter is here and Christmas is on our doorsteps, but for 'Crompton Enthusiasts' who enjoy riding behind and seeing Cromptons on passenger services, Christmas came over a month early. A severe shortage of serviceable Network Class 50's and DEMU's in November led to a field day for Crompton fans as they were drafted in to cover for many trains each day. Things started to look good in the last 2 days of October when 33109 and a TC set was used in place of a DEMU on the Reading to Basingstoke shuttle. Moving into November, Cromptons started to make occasional appearances on the Waterloo - Salisbury service. On Guy Fawkes Day (5th Nov) 33101 went to Salisbury and back on the 1215 from Waterloo, returning on the 1513 from Salisbury. On 7 November 33108 in the 'Dutch' livery appeared with a TC on the 1840 Waterloo - Salisbury service. 8th November saw repainted 33116, in all - over grey, with a TC set on the Waterloo - Salisbury services all day. 116 started the day with the 0809 Salisbury - Waterloo returning with the 1015 ex -Waterloo then worked the 1312 Salisbury - Waterloo, and the 1640 Waterloo - Salisbury.

The week commencing the 12 November saw yet more Crompton workings, due to the severe shortage of Class 50's. 2 basic diagrams on the Waterloo - Salisbury line were introduced which are as follows:

1)     0809     Salisbury - Waterloo

     1015     Waterloo - Salisbury

     1312     Salisbury - Waterloo

     1640     Waterloo - Salisbury

2)   0915     Waterloo - Salisbury

     1118     Salisbury - Waterloo

     1515     Waterloo - Salisbury

     1724     Salisbury - Waterloo

For diagram one a Crompton and TC set was used and on diagram two was a Crompton and conventional loco-hauled stock (load six on up trains and load 9 on down trains) with the Crompton being replaced by a Class 50 at Salisbury for the journey to Exeter; this of course delayed trains by 10 minutes or so. The loco on diagram 2 did also work the 2040 Waterloo - Yeovil Jcn. a couple of times.

Monday 12th saw 33109 on diagram 1 and 33101 on diagram two. To add to the excitement, the Class 50 on the 1115 Waterloo - Exeter train failed by Woking and was replaced by 33117 for the run through to Exeter St. Davids, arriving a couple of hours late. Tuesday 13th saw 33116 replace 33101 on diagram 2 and 33109 was off diagram 1. 33109 replaced a DEMU on the Salisbury - Southampton shuttle.

Wednesday 14th saw 33116 and 33109 work the same trains as the previous day, with 33101 with a blue/grey TC set on the 1840 Waterloo - Salisbury.

Thursday 15th 33109 and TC set on diagram one.

33101 and TC set on Southampton - Salisbury service.

33116 and 6 coaches on the 1840 Waterloo - Salisbury service.

On Saturday 17th 33109 worked a morning train from Waterloo to Salisbury with a TC set; 109 failed on her return journey, the 1513 ex-Salisbury, just after departure from Salisbury. This time a DEMU to the rescue and worked the service through to Waterloo. 33101/109/116 have also been noted working the Claphan Jcn - Kensington Olympia shuttle with a TC set from time to time.

With a revised timetable due out on 21st January 1991 for the Waterloo - Salisbury - Exeter line comes a basic cut in service to cut the need for Class 50's; the poor customer suffers again. Why don't British Rail put the Class 33/1's and TC's back on the Waterloo - Salisbury route, until the new DEMU stock is delivered in 1992? It just shows that BR need the 33's; they always come to the rescue, 24hours a day, 365 days in the year.

Modifications

Class 33 fleet in due course will have headlights fitted, by Eastleigh TMD and Stewarts Lane TMD.

Also in 1991 the fleet will have cab telephones put in, they will have a plate fitted to the cab roof (metal) and not an aerial, because the Class 33 roof is glass-fibre, and Stewarts Lane inform us that they do not want to start drilling holes in the roof in case it starts any leaks.

33009 will have a 60MPH governor fitted while on its CEM at Eastleigh Works.

Nameplate re-painted

33008 Eastleigh. The 'Eastleigh' nameplate was repainted with a dark Grey back ground finish, instead of a red background, during early November. The nameplates were re-fitted by EH TMD during late November.

General Notes

On Thursday November 8th 1990, TML and Railfreight Construction ran the 1,000th (one thousand) train from the Isle of Grain to the Channel Tunnel site at Shakespeare Cliff; this was achieved in under three years of operation.

Freshly repainted 33021 with 33051'Shakespeare Cliff' worked the train, the 6Z85 1243 (Grain - Shakespeare Cliff with 24 loaded PXA wagons loaded with over 400 Channel Tunnel Segments. 33021 was the leading locomotive with a headboard marking the occasion; this headboard was carried throughout the run. The headboard showed the TML and Railfreight Construction symbols and the wording was "1000th Channel Tunnel Segment Train'.
