| Notes |
Terry Butcher was
one of the first signings made by Graeme Souness, and arguably the most important.
The capture of Butcher, a player in his prime and just back from a relatively successful
World Cup in Mexico '86, was a significant move for Rangers. It signalled a reversal
in the trend of big name players heading south to Liverpool, Man Utd and the like.
The impact Butcher made on the side was total, and manifested itself in the League being
won by the Ibrox side at Souness' first time of asking. The 1986/87 championship was
won at Pittodrie on the penultimate day of the season, and it was a typically
Butcher-inspired performance against a very strong Aberdeen side. Later on, a leg
break would keep Butcher out of the side for some months, but his contribution cannot be
underestimated. It is surprising to realise that Terry Butcher only spent four
seasons as a Rangers player, such was his impact on the club. |
