Q
Why should I pay any attention to anything you have to say.
A
You don't, advice should only be optional. The one thing I have in common with a lot of tattooists is that we are very self opinionated. I don't know if that's a good thing or not, but it's making me take the time to develop this site. The answers I give in this section reflect my own personal views on things, I will not be dragged into slagging off specific tattooists.

Q
Why are you doing this site.
A
I am beginning to spend more and more time repairing work from local so called tattooists who either haven't got the ability or can't be bother to do a good job. As far as I am concerned, if I can educate people into seeing them for what they are, there will be a lot less disappointed people and perhaps these "tattooists" will get their act together.

Q
Do tattoo's hurt.
A
Well the short answer is yes, they all hurt. Some feel it as mild discomfort, while others think it's the worst pain they have ever felt. The problem is that the feeling is very difficult to describe because it's more of an experience than a feeling.

Q
Can I do anything to help me prepare for my first tattoo.
A
Yes, take care of personal hygiene and eat something. Balancing the blood sugars before you have a tattoo is very important as it helps you combat pain, the easiest way to do this is to eat something with sugar (that real sugar not diet crap). It also helps to wear something appropriate.

Q
How do I know that the studio is safe.
A
Every studio you encounter in England has to display a certificate from the local health authority, it will carry the names of all the tattooists registered to work in that studio. This means that the studio meets the minimum health requirements and your safety should be assured. If you can't see it, ask why it is not displayed as they are breaking the law. Make sure whoever tattoos you is on the registration certificate.

Q
Will I get aids or something.
A
There have been no documented cases that I am aware of. The sterilization techniques employed by tattooist kill the aids virus. Cross contamination from a previous client should not be possible.

Q
How can I tell a good tattooist.
A
Not easy, all I can do is give you pointers, shop around, don't settle for the first place you visit. Some tattooist will let you watch them working, but ask first, don't upset your potential tattooist. Ask customers if you can see their new tattoo, you'll find that most will be more than happy to show you their new masterpiece. If you look through the tattooist's portfolio keep an open mind as to how old the photo's are and that they represent a very small fraction of what the tattooist has done. Above all if you don't feel comfortable or you begin to feel uneasy get out of there, your inner voice is there for a reason, listen to it.

Q
My mate will do me a cheaper one
A
I dare say they will, but with very very few exceptions, you will end up with a very cheap looking tattoo. Don't forget also that they are not forced by law to protect you, their procedures for sterilization (if they have any) will not be up to the minimum standard set out by your local health authority. They are known as "SCRATCHERS" within the trade and prey on the ignorant and unwary. If they do not display a current genuine health certificate they are dangerous and best avoided. You can also do everybody a good turn and report them to the local environment health officer.

Q
How much skin do I have to show
A
Each Tattooist has there own way of working, the important thing to realise is that it is not keyhole surgery. You pick the placement of your tattoo and all that comes with that choice. If you are not prepared to show a bit of skin, pick another place. |

Q
Does my age figure in the quality of the Tattoo
A
I'm afraid it does, subject to the minimum age limit of the country, there are other considerations. As we age the skin loses its elasticity, it begins to go baggy on all of us. Wrinkles appear, stretch marks and it gets thinner. It all adds up to after a certain age the skin does get harder to tattoo and the results are harder to predict. As we all age at different rates, there is no definitive age I can give you. |

|
Q
Does the colour of my skin matter
A
Your skin colour matters a great deal, the ultimate colour of your tattoo is dictated by your skin pigment, the darker your colour the darker the tattoo will be. On very dark skin, lighter tattoo pigments are very unpredictable, it is not uncommon for the lighter pigments to become invisible. |

Q
Will the way I let it heal matter.
A
The first few weeks of any tattoo's life is critical to its life expectancy, your tattooist should tell you their preferred way of looking after your new tattoo. There are a lot of so called experts out there with their one tattoo, it never stops amazing me that someone that has just spent good money on their new tattoo will jeopardise it my listening to their mate.

Q
Why no pictures of designs on the site
A
I only have permission to reproduce the designs as tattoos, I do not hold the copyright to the designs at the studio, so putting the designs on the web site would be breaking the law.
