The Question of the Meaning of Being

Making sense of Martin Heidegger's 'Being & Time'

Heidegger's 'Being and Time' addresses the question of the meaning of being.

The organisation of this summary matches that of Heidegger's text. Pages may be viewed sequentially using the 'Next' links at the foot of each page. The 'Contents' list allows you to jump to specific sections. There are occasional 'Digressions' on related themes and a short bibliography.

Signs, like the one below, can be used to jump to particular sections. Headings within quotation marks (repeated on the signs) are my own. Sub-headings (without quotation marks) are Heidegger's.

Quotations within this summary are, in each case, taken from the section being discussed unless individually identified by page references within brackets. Most are from Joan Stambaugh's translation (JS, 1996) though some are taken from Macquarrie and Robinson's earlier version (M&R, 1962). Page references are to the standard German text - these are found in the margin of both English translations.
