PS Westward Ho

Lieutenant John Black DSC

This picture is displayed by courtesy of his grandson, Leighton Passant. Lt. Black was awarded the Distinguised Service Medal in 1918 for keeping his steamer PS Westward Ho, then minesweeping in the North Sea, longer in service in the course of a year than any other paddler. Lt. Black was a long standing engineer with P&A Campbell both sides of the Great War and escaped injury after a mine exploded, damaging the kite it was towing which crashed into the ship. Lt. Black is seen here proudly displaying the DSC.
