This picture was taken on board HMS Skiddaw at Granton in 1940 and shows Hector McFadyen's precious compound diagonal engines, which he tended to before, during and after the Second World War. Despite the fact that this was wartime one can see that they were immaculately maintained, with gleaming brass and steel everywhere. These engines lasted sixty years of service in peace and wartime.
