This picture shows the early cross channel steamer PS Alliance. She sailed between Southampton, Havre and later Jersey, Granville and St. Malo, but can you identify where this picture was taken?

My thanks go to Duncan Mirylees and Jean Paul Anger who have identified the setting as ST. MALO. Jean Paul adds further: I was looking at a wreck map around Dunkirk and then reached your site curious to see the lost links to harbour sites. Nearly all photos have been connected to their location. When I saw PS Alliance I recognize in the dark the wall around the intra-muros city of St Malo and the dungeon which is now housing the City Hall. I was born in Britanny 25 miles south of this place. From the place where the photo was taken it is quite difficult nowadays to imagine the panorama a century ago. After the wholesale destruction at the end of the Second World War including the cathedral, it was rebuilt as high as houses in the left. The wharf is still the same and this mooring post is now used by the tug. In the background is the port of yachts with club house, one mile from the new railway station with TGV.
